Hello Garden Crew!
I am reaching out to provide you with the periodic update. Here’s the scoop:
Latest Demo Day
Thank you to Raphael and Travis for coming out to help lead the Demo Day on 11/7! It was a rainy day, which required extra chutzpah from our crew, but it worked out really well to help loosen the soil and to provide our little seeds with initial irrigation. We got a lot of work done thanks to our dedicated crew. Check it out! (see attached photos) Notably, a couple of passers by were shocked (and perhaps horrified) that we would be ripping out the brand new blades of grass that had sprung up after the first rain. Luckily, our well-reasoned crew informed them that we were, in fact, removing non-native grass that requires constant irrigation and replacing the grass with native coastal flowers which are less water-intensive and help sustain native critters. So, education should be counted amongst the victories of the day as well =)
Next Demo Day
We got a ton done, but we still have the sloped area to finish, as well as the area around the fruit trees. I’m thinking the final Phase I garden day should be this Sunday, same time (11am - ?), same place. Who can be there?
Upkeep in the meantime…
Although we laid down rice straw to help keep the seeds/soil moist, the planted areas are probably going to need watered in between rains. In fact, although we are supposed to see rain this weekend, the planted areas probably could use a little water right about now. We need a volunteer to help out by heading over to the Green Spot, checking the soil under the straw for moisture, and then watering if needed. There are a couple rain barrels with faucets on the south side of the building (by Pine Ave.), which would be preferable to use since the rain is already there…more ocean friendly! However, the faucet is not threaded to allow the existing hose to connect, so a connector with a threaded end (--there is an ACE hardware right there on Forest…if you buy something, we can reimburse you) or watering cans will be needed. There is also a spigot on the north side of the building with an attached hose…all you will need is a pair of pliers (or you can borrow some from Applied Solar if you are there during business hours) to turn the spigot. The spigot can be used to water the planted areas on the north and east side of the building. There is already a hose on that one (score!).
Monterey County Gives
For those of you who don’t know, the Monterey Chapter has entered into the Monterey County Gives campaign via the Monterey County Weekly newspaper in an effort to raise funds for future phases of this project. Woohoo! The campaign begins this Thursday, Nov. 18. Please tell all your friends to go online at www.montereycountygives.com and click on the “Donate Now” tab to help raise money for this effort. The Weekly will help match the funds raised by readers, so everyone’s contribution will be amplified.

As always, thanks for your interest and involvement in this effort. Please let me know if you are able to help with any of the above requests, and please feel free to forward the requests to interested friends or family. (Travis- please forward this to the lovely family who helped out last demo day?—thanks!)
Cheers!
