  • Date: Friday, January 30
  • Time: 4:30pm
  • Location: CSUMB, Chapman building, room S128
  • Topic: (Relative) Introduction to R
New R users are often given the barebones of introductions to R. This often includes download and installation, using R like a calculator, searching for help, and how to load a specific library in order to use a specific function. There are many other features of R that would greatly help beginning users but are not necessarily covered sufficiently or early enough to maximize the benefit the new R user.

This meeting will be a "back to the basics" discussion, showing off some of the not-as-immediate functionality, tips, and tricks of R and RStudio. The specific set of topics is not set yet (and will adapt somewhat to the audience), but may include snippets of:
  • Various data sets
  • Other packages and some library management
  • R Markdown (Rmd) files for workflows and papers
  • Graphics (base) options
  • Other (not-in-R) resources for R help (including this group)
This list can easily get intractably large.

Hope to see you there!

Attached is the script for today. Feel free to share it, keep it, use it, whatever serves your purpose. Everything in it is either created by me specifically for this meeting or copied verbatim (or close to it) from help documents associated with a package.

(I opted to *not* cover R Markdown this time, mostly because it really can take a lot of time even to demo its basic features, much less how to use it smartly and richly.)
