Dear community gardeners ,
First, I like dogs generally.
Dog owners who bring dogs into the community garden are on my *#!- list though. This is the 4th time this year I have stepped into dog crap in my own plot, ( and yes, it's dog crap, not cat crap, unless we have a cougar sized cat getting into the garden, that is leaving enormous piles of crap. ) I do not have a dog, so it's not my dog crapping in my plot. This time the dog crap was next to , and on top of , food I eat. I'm really furious, and fed up.
We ,the riverside community gardeners , have left nice notes, stern notes , etc, about the dog CRAP , but whoever has a dog that is doing this is either unable or unwilling to keep their dog close with them as they garden, and thereby monitor dog crapping. Obviously some or one community garden member seems unable or unwilling to leash their dogs and keep them immediately alongside them when they are in the garden.
This is not a dog park, it's a community garden where we grow food to eat. I should not have to wonder if my food has been peed on , or crapped on in here. That's at least one reason we have a fence around the garden.
Therefore , as this is a repeated issue in the community garden, I would like to propose we have a complete ban on dogs inside the garden, leashed or not, as it's clear this issue hasn't taken seriously or addressed by the dog owners in our community garden .
I'd love to hear what other garden members think about this.
Really seriously,
Christmas

Dear jane,( and community garden folks )
I didn't even think of Frankie, as he's usually attached to you wherever you are. I haven't seen him leave your side in the garden, unless you put him by the gate with his leash in the shade when it's sunny. I have never seen him wander inside the garden.
However, someone is doing this, by not carefully keeping their dog alongside and with them, while they are in the garden, and it just keeps happening, and I'm fed up with it.
As I don't go into the garden often, just now , I'm not sure how long this crap has been there as I stepped into it while clearing out my tomato cages and dead tomato plants , and other stuff etc. It was right next to greens I was trying to harvest. It absolutely covered a pair of running shoes squishing up onto the top , and sides from the soles , as I didn't see it, (or even imagine I'd have dog crap INSIDE my plot. ) I am now trying for the third time to get this dog crap out of the running shoes that were covered in crap.
(I don't have many shoes that I can comfortably wear with the condition my feet are in, so it's wildly irritating. This is one of two pairs I can wear with comfort now. I can't afford to buy new shoes just because of this , so I'm desperately trying to salvage them. However, the crap got into every crevice and air hole in these shoes, and I don't want to smell like dog crap everywhere I go.)
Nobody in the garden should have to deal with this. The other 3 times (!!) I've stepped into dog crap inside the community garden , it was on the paths in various places somewhere. I'm just fed up, as it's been all this year, with several notes left , asking nicely, (then less nicely by others ) asking for the dog owners to watch their dogs in the garden, but whoever has this dog , or dogs, just doesn't pay attention to what their animal(s?) doing.
Dogs will just do what they need to wherever they are unless someone is watching , and has them leashed next to them . Whoever has brought their dog in and doesn't watch it , is ruining the garden for all of us. It's just not fair to have our food and garden ruined by this. It's really unsanitary to have this be going on where we all grow food .Something has to change, and a ban in dogs in the garden is the sole solution I could imagine, since everything else has failed to get the attention of this dog owner. ( or owners ?)
I'm really angry, and tired about this situation and unable to imagine any other solution as this has been happening this whole year. Do any of you have any other solution you can think up?
With aggravation and frustration, Christmas
