Need some excellent pollinators for your garden? Blue Orchard Mason Bees are highly effective pollinators, achieving 95% pollination success. Not only are these tiny insects low maintenance, but they will also complete the essential task of pollinating your fruiting plants so they can produce bountiful crops!

Read below to find out more about these special Mason Bees and how to add them to your garden!

What are Mason Bees?

Blue Orchard Mason Bees (Osmia lignoria propinqua) are non-aggressive bees that live in solitary nesting tubes. They are smaller than honeybees and don't live in hives. Mason Bees make excellent pollinators and have 95% pollination success compared to honey bees, which typically only pollinate 5% of the flowers they visit in a day. They are cold hardy and resistant to disease as long as their homes are kept clean, so they are easy to maintain year after year.

Life Cycle

Mason bees begin hatching in the spring. Male bees emerge first and wait for the females to emerge. Once the female bees emerge, they mate and male bees die soon after. The female bees will then build nests using clay and pollen, which they will lay an egg in. They seal off each nesting chamber and continue this process. The eggs will hatch the next season and carry out the same process.

How will the Mason Bees Arrive?

We ship the mason bees in a cardboard box while they are dormant in their cocoons for the winter, as pictured below. If you received the bees before it is time to release them, simply place the box in your refrigerator or a cool place that stays between 40-50°F. Once outdoor temperatures are regularly above 55º F, the bees can be released outside. Open the box and set it outside, and the bees will emerge after a few hours or sometimes days.

Placing Nests

Mason Bees need somewhere to make a nest, such as in the nooks and crannies of a tree or in Mason Bee Tubes. If you choose to order Mason Bee Tubes, put them in some sort of shelter that protects them from the wind and rain. A good spot is under the eaves of the east facing side of a house, or 5-8 feet high on a solid branch of a tree.

Mason Bee Requirements

Moist clay soil is needed for female bees to build the cell walls of the nesting chamber. If your soil is not naturally high in clay, we recommend setting out a container of clay powder close to the nest for the bees to use.
- The mason bees will also need flowering plants close to the nest. Mason bees prefer single flowers to hybrids and double blossoms. In addition, blue, purple, or yellow blossoms are most attractive to the adult mason bees.

Orchard Mason Bees
$25.95 - $99.75

Become a beekeeper with Mason Bees and have the best native pollinator around. All you have to do is release the Mason Bees directly from our provided box when your fruit trees begin to bloom each year. Our Mason Bee box comes with 20 or 100 of these amazing bees. Choose 20 (pollinates 4-5 fruit trees) or save more money and go big with a box of 100 bees.  Our Mason bees are the biggest and most vigorous bees we could source.

Please note, these bees are shipped dormant in their cocoons. We recommend always opening the box outside as they are live bees and may wake up during transit in warmer weather. If you receive the bees before the ideal time to release them in your area, it is best to store them in the refrigerator until they are ready to be released.
