We're still working on the particulars of the schedule, but should have it all together soon.

Save the Date June 25-27, 2008

Celebrating Community:

County History in the Classroom

Learn how your students can conduct hand’s-on research and engage in thoughtful analysis while actively participating in important county—and other local—milestones. Provide students with the tools they need to contribute to their community in meaningful ways. Join us for the Montana Historical Society’s 2008 Summer Teacher Institute, Celebrating Community: County History in the Classroom, June 25-27.

This institute is being held in conjunction with the Society’s statewide County History Initiative, an ongoing endeavor prompted by the large number of Montana counties that will be celebrating centennials over the next several years, as well as the upcoming sesquicentennial of Montana’s eight original counties in 2014.  While county history has provided the impetus for this institute, the materials presented will apply equally to observing all types of local milestones for towns and schools.

Over the course of three days, you will be instructed by leaders in the field of heritage education, noted historians, and celebrated authors. You will be introduced to the Society’s collections of primary source materials and have the opportunity to brainstorm classroom applications for this material with experienced colleagues as they share what has worked in their own classrooms.

Best of all, your experience at this Heritage Education institute will transfer to your students . Return to the classroom with new ways to teach your students about the significance of their local history and the need to preserve it, and with new techniques to help them sharpen their research and writing skills.  Discover how studying local history can forge intergenerational connection and how requiring students to give “gifts of scholarship” to their communities can deepen their commitment to learning and understanding of themselves and their place in the larger world.

The institute is free and there are a limited number of travel scholarships available. For more information—including a complete schedule of events and information on earning credits—contact Linda Wruck, Education Officer, at 406-444-4794 or email lwr...@mt.gov.

Come discover how to connect heritage education to your students’ lives.

This sounds great. It's fun to see the Society continuing the game. M

Hello, all:

I remember a heritage project teacher telling me about discussion questions she remembered using the acronym DICE: DICE (“What disturbed you? What interested you? What confused you? What enlightened you?”)

I want to include this acronym/set of questions in a video guide we are finally creating for Montana Mosaic but I want to give proper credit. Does anyone know where this came from?

Thanks for any leads you might be able to give.

Hope everyone is having a good summer.

Martha

p.s. I just got to see Tim and Renee at Preserve America workshops the Society organized in Miles City and Red Lodge. They gave great presentations that really helped spread the heritage education gospel.

It came from me, but I got it at an NCTE conference -- don't know the source.  You might want to look it up on the internet to see if you can find one.  :-)  I use it all the time, but I'm not "publishing" it other than in units for OPI.

I almost answered, "It has to be Dottie"--even though I didn't remember.

It is a nice tool. I think I'll use it (with credit, of course). Thanks.
