Hi Jay,
Please see the announcement for the Effects of Irrigation Efficiency Improvements at Multiple Scales webinar planned for April 27 at 2pm MDT. Can you please forward this announcement to our IBCP list? Space is limited but the webinar will be recorded and available for viewing soon after. Feel free to let me know if you have any question or concerns. Cheers.

Effects of Irrigation Efficiency Improvements at Multiple Scales

Length: 1 ½ hours

What will you learn?
Participants will learn about fish and wildlife habitat and groundwater recharge functions provided by surface irrigation systems and the potential unintended adverse impacts of irrigation efficiency improvements.
Conversion of flood irrigation systems to sprinkler systems and earthen irrigation ditches to pipelines are common conservation practices for which NRCS provides technical and financial assistance, especially in the Intermountain West. Water quantity and quality resource concerns are typically considered and thought to benefit from such practices. Farmers often desire center pivot systems to reduce labor associated with maintaining surface irrigation. However, these practices can also have adverse impacts that often are not given appropriate consideration during the NRCS Conservation Planning Process and concurrent Environmental Evaluation. In fact, some recent studies have shown that even the assumed water conservation benefit is not actually achieved at the Basin scale. This webinar features lessons learned from several Intermountain West River Basins that have experienced large-scale conversion of surface irrigation systems to sprinklers. The objective is to improve planners’ analysis of resource data, formulation of alternatives, evaluation of effects of alternatives, and compliance with policy when planning and designing practices to improve irrigation efficiency.
Who should participate?
Conservationists, Biologists, Engineers, Hydrologists, Others. Webinar is focused on the Intermountain West, but concepts presented may have applicability in other regions
where sprinkler systems rely on groundwater pumping.
