Chansey (Normal)
Overview
########
Chansey is one of the bulkiest special walls in Monotype with Eviolite. Chansey can effectively beat almost all the special attackers in the entire Monotype metagame. However, it hates getting its Eviolite knocked off. In addition to shutting down most special sweepers, Chansey provides a vast array of support due to its expansive support movepool, including moves such as Heal Bell, Wish, and Stealth Rock. However, it struggles against Fighting Monotypes and it falls to powerful wallbreakers.
Stealth Rock

Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave / Toxic
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
Moves
========
Out of all of Normal’s Stealth Rockers, Chansey is by far the most reliable and useful. It finds plenty of opportunities to switch in, and it has recovery letting it stay healthy. Thunder Wave or Toxic are two standard support moves ran on Chansey depending on your team. Toxic forces switches while putting everything on a timer which works great on bulkier teams whereas Thunder Wave is useful for crippling fast opponents which is important for slow sweepers such as Diggersby and Meloetta. Soft-Boiled is for recovery. Wish can be used, but Chansey has a hard time fitting it in, and it may be hard to pull off without Protect. Seismic Toss is mandatory since it prevents Chansey from being setup and taunt fodder.
Set Details
========
Max HP and Defense combined with a Bold nature let Chansey be as bulky as possible. A defensive spread of 4/252/252 can be run, but you lose out on a lot of Physical bulk as well as 2HKO from Keldeo’s Secret Sword after rocks. Eviolite is mandatory since it boosts both defenses.
Usage Tips
========
Do not be afraid to switch it in when you’re facing a special attacker. Chances are, even if it carries Fighting coverage, it’ll fail to do a significant amount of damage to it. Chansey is also a nice status absorber with Natural Cure and it can be used as a pivot. Soft-Boiling often is a good idea as well, since you will be switching it in and out.
Team Options
========
Chansey forms the Eviolite core with Porygon2. Porygon2 acts as your Psychical wall and can further whittle down the opposing team with whatever it wants due to its expansive movepool. Staraptor also forms a great core because of its access to Intimidate and Defog. Intimidate shuts down Psychic Fighting types while Defog removes hazards who take off a chunk of Chansey’s HP every time she switches in.
Other Options
########
Wish and Protect can be used instead of Soft-Boiled and Stealth Rock to create a Wish Pass set. However, most Normal types already have Recovery and/or don’t need it to function. Heal Bell is also a great move to have if you have trouble with status. However, Chansey has a hard time fitting this in.
Checks & Counters
########
Fighting-Types: Especially Physical, but even Special STABs are able to strip Chansey 30% of its health. These attacks pressure Chansey into switching making it take hazard damage when it comes back in.
Wallbreakers: Even Chansey has a hard time stomaching Specs boosted STAB moves after hazards making it a great way to defeat it.
Hazards: Chansey hates hazards, so getting up Spikes and Stealth Rock will make it lose 24% of its health everytime it switches in. If you keep on forcing it to constantly switch, you will eventually beat it.
Some Set-Up Sweepers: Pokemon such as Aegislash and Suicune are able to set-up all over Chansey. With the latter being immune to Toxic and Seismic Toss while the other can Rest off status and damage.
