Etienne, en soutien à Will.

Subject: Kenya Support needed

Dear All,

Myself and 5 Bangladesh community members are all out of jail on bail and very happily! There will be a court hearing on Wednesday the 5th, after which we will know the charges and potential progress toward a trial.

A brief summary of the news on the topic can be found here: http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/?articleID=2000084855&story_title=ngo-accused-of-supplying-illegal-tender and Information about the program can be found here: http://koru.or.ke/bangla

Below are areas where your support will really help:
-Technical assistance - sending emails to myself and our lawyer explaining that the Central Banks of several countries allow and even support complementary currency schemes similar as the Bangla-pesa voucher. Also that such systems do not threaten or destabilize National currencies or economies.
-Legal assistance - contacting lawyers who could, technically, support our lawyer in Kenya, Leonard Shimaka  shimakal...@gmail.com<mailto:shimakal...@gmail.com>
-Media assistance - Given that we are no longer in jail - I have been advised to wait to address media issues until after the hearing to avoid potentially making matters worse.
-Financial support - should this case continue, support in this area will be very important.

The results from Bangla-Pesa were actually quite wonderful - although now cut short. We hope present them for the ISS CCS conference in June. Sadly, I will most likely at this point not be able to attend, as my passport has been taken by the court.

On behalf of myself, my wife, our 6 week old daughter and our families, as well as the whole community of Bangladesh Kenya, thanks so much for everyone's support on this. We are very hopeful that it will set a positive precedent for poverty reduction programs in the future.

Best,

Will Ruddick

Hi Will

I am so sorry for you, and I dont know how I could be of an effective support for you.
At the present time I can only testify on my own experience.
I am one of the leaders of the local complementary currency movement in France, (and now in Quebec / Canada) where I live.
Local currencies started 3 years ago in France (they started much earlier in Germany).
Over 20 experiences are now operating in various cities and regions in France and annother 30 in progress.
We have the support of the local authorities and legal frame from the Central bank (Banque de France as well as this of Bank du Canada)

I suppose that the problem you face comes from the belief  that your local currency competes illigaly your national currency.
This is not the intention at any time as we insist on the fact that theses currencies are COMPLEMENTARY. They are seen here in Europe, North America and everywhere else (more than 5000 experiences around the world) as a citizen tool bringing great benefits to local economy and social relations. They contribute to a higher level of peace and prosperity for the highest good of all.

I dont know if it can help  but I wrote a book (in french) Les monnaies locales complémentaires, pourquoi, comment (ed Yves Michel)
http://aises-fr.org/211-livres-PhD.html

On the web site of my association you will find general information about the subject :http://aises-fr.org/300-monnaies-compl.html

I also made a video in french - english and spanish, treating of money and presenting the solution that represent the local complementary currencies.

I hope that the authorities of your country, after having a better view of the movement in progress in the world, will understand that local complementary currencies are very beneficial to the population, and will support your action instead of taking you to Court.

Hope that these few line will be of some help

With my best wishes

Philippe Derudder
