The on-premises data gateway must be online 24/7 and installed on a network computer that is always running. For optimal performance and reliability, Mekorma recommends that a wired network be used in lieu of a wireless connection.

As we explain in the overview, you can install a gateway either in personal mode, which applies to Power BI only, or in standard mode. We recommend standard mode. In that mode, you can install a standalone gateway or add a gateway to a cluster, which we recommend for high availability.

You could install other applications on the gateway machine, but these applications might degrade gateway performance. If you do install other applications on the gateway machine, be sure to monitor the gateway closely to check if there's any resource contention.

You can install up to two gateways on a single computer: one running in personal mode and the other running in standard mode. An on-premises data gateway (personal mode) can be used only with Power BI. You can't have more than one gateway running in the same mode on the same computer.

When using an on-premises data gateway (standard mode) to access a data source on a remote domain, the gateway has to be installed on a domain joined machine having a trust relationship with the target domain.

When private link is enabled, disable private link before installing the gateway. After installation, you can re-enable it. If private link is enabled, you'll get the following error when trying to register a new gateway or migrate/restore/takeover an existing gateway:

To disable private link, go to the powerbi.com page, and select Settings > Admin portal. Look for the Advanced networking section at the bottom of the page, and disable the Azure Private Link property. After the gateway is configured, you can enable the Azure Private Link property.

Because the gateway runs on the computer that you install it on, be sure to install it on a computer that's always turned on. For better performance and reliability, we recommend that the computer is on a wired network rather than a wireless one.

If the on-premises data gateway (standard mode) requires access to a remote data source in a different domain, it must be installed on a domain joined machine having a trust relationship with the target domain.

Because you can install only one standard gateway on a computer, you must install each additional gateway in the cluster on a different computer. This requirement makes sense because you want redundancy in the cluster.

After you sign in to your Office 365 organization account, register the gateway. Select Add to an existing cluster. In the Available gateway clusters list, select the primary gateway, which is the first gateway you installed. Enter the recovery key for that gateway. Select Configure.

I am using the latest power bi version and trying to install latest version of gateway too. Also my system requirements are as required. I am using power bi on my personal machine. Also I am installing this freshly.

Hi all,
I am getting the below error while I try to install a standard Gateway to use in Power-BI. Can anyone help and share what I should do to get rid of this error and get the gateway to use in PowerBI. Any help regarding this would be hightly appreciated as I have been juggling with this issue for long.

I'm concerned that if I were to try to install a new data gateway (like the app is suggesting) installing a new gateway will cause all kinds of issues for me and my Power BI On-Premise data gateway (personal mode) that is already established and working.

Gateways themselves (the installation) do not interfere with each other if they are on different computers/servers. You can have a personal gateway on one or more individual's computers within an organization AND a standard gateway installed for the organization (or clusters of standard gateways if needed). The interference is if you are having them refresh the same thing. Only one of them should be used to refresh a specific data source/data set. There are a number of reasons for this that I won't get into here.

When you publish the report to the service, then pick the gateway that you will use (preferrably the standard gateway since that should be the more reliable one in regards to being "on" all the time).

As I have already mentioned, the Power BI Data Gateway is a kind of bridge between the on-premises data sources and the Power BI service available on the cloud. The gateway is a windows application that has to be installed on the same network as the other data sources are in. If you see the figure below, there are multiple steps that take place while querying through the data gateway. As you can see, there is also a clear distinction in the architecture between the cloud services and the on-premise data sources.

The Power BI Data Gateway can be installed on a Windows PC or Server. However, it is not advisable to install it on a device that might be turned off, because in such a case the gateway service will stop, and the data refresh will stop. In order to install the gateway, please follow the steps below.

They have this gateway setup on a very simple network: Netgear Prosafe Switch FS108P, Ion 2k, Airport WAP (for Ipad Mini), and this NET3 gateway. They have an identical setup for some other stages here and are experiencing the same crashing issues. These rigs are outputting between 600 and 1200 addresses depending on which stage they are on on a given day. They are on for an average of 15 hours a day, and 5 or 6 days a week, and are power cycled at least once a day, usually twice a day (during moves).

4 times since July 1 they have had a gateway just completely drop connection to the consoles. The gateway doesn't loose power, it shows as not having connectivity to the console (all four ports flashing). They have cycled power on the entire control rig (including switches and consoles) and had it come back up. This isn't during fades, large changes or anything. Just sitting idle for hours, and then bang, nothing. I'm not clear if the dimmers maintain state or turn off, but I can find out if that would inform the situation.

Is the more info on this thread? I have a brand new system which is crashing, network error sounds very similar. I have Ion, 4-port and 2-port Net3 gateways, net gear power safe 8-port network switch with 4-port PoE. All cat5e has been checked for standard B and length. IP addresses are in the correct 10.101.range. i appreciate any insight! I have not even be able to build a show yet because I can't get the system stable. Thanks.

Start by connecting the gateway. Plug in the gateway power adapter and make sure the light is solid blue. Next, plug in the uplink connection into the port indicated with "uplink" or "LAN1". To power the anchors and connect them to the gateway, there are two options available. Either connect them via a DC power cable, or via Power over Ethernet (PoE+).

First, power the anchor by plugging the DC Power adapter into the anchor. Validate the power supply by checking if the LED light turned on. Then, plug in an ethernet cable in port 1, and plug in the other end of the ethernet cable into one of the four anchor network points in the gateway. The LED light on the anchor should turn solid green after a couple of seconds.
