TVPaint Animation (also known as TVPaint, TVP, Bauhaus Mirage or NewTek Aura) is a 2D paint and digital animation software package developed by TVPaint Developpement SARL based in Lorraine, France. Originally released for Amiga in 1991,[1] version 3.0 (1994) introduced support for other platforms.[2] In 1999, the last Amiga version 3.59 was released as free download.[3][4] TVPaint Animation currently runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android operating systems.

Yes, however, I should mention that this course does not teach the concepts of animation, but rather shows you the tools and methods for animating with the software. Check out our Animation Foundations course for the basic principles of animation.

My Tvpaint student license is about to expire shortly, and I will probably only have a new license in September. I've had a rough pass physically and mentally, so I haven't finished the short animation project I have been working on. I'm unfortunately afraid that my license is going to end before my drawing hand has healed enough to complete the work that needs to be done in there.

TVPaint Animation 11 Standard
is the leading paperless drawing and animation tool, able to imitate traditional techniques such as pen brush, gouache, watercolor, pencil, felt-tip and airbrush, and animate them over frames. Using only TVPaint Animation 11 Standard, you can create an animated movie from start to finish, including storyboarding and all the steps (rough, clean-up, key frames and in-between) through to final composing.

[important update] It appears that what I am mentioning at the end of the post is very serious, as far as I understand it Bauhaus is only a reseller and the French company is the actual creator of Mirage. The last version of Mirage available on Bahaus website is Mirage 1.5 which is not the newest release. The new release has been renamed TVPaint 8.1.1 (do you remember TVPaint?) and it offers features more suited for digital 2d animation. Buying from Bahaus will not allow you to upgrade to the new version and only TVPaint is intelMacs compatible.

Here is the 2d animation software I am testing those days. I have been trying several since the begining of the month in order to improve my drawing skills and hopefully my animation skills and a better understanding on spacing.

Toon Boom is a cool software because it offers a landscape mode timeline where you hold poses instead of just copying them. Copying is good but if you make changes you would prefer to see them reflected on the held poses instead of deleting them all and copying them back. One great thing too is that you can rotate the workspace. Now one thing that can put people off is the drawing mode. Toon Boom is a vector software so every paintstroke is interpreted in a clean mathematical manner. It is great if you love sharp looking animations with a finished feel to it but not so great if you are the kind of guy who needs to rough stuff up before hand.

When you're working on the animation at full size , you can zoom-in the project window so you're not seeing the margin areas with the notes , but whenever you need to check the notes or add notes , it's easy to zoom out the interface to see the margins around the Camera field.

The animation and coloring was done in TVPaint, the backgrounds painted in Photoshop and the final compositing was done in After Effects. (Although you can paint the backgrounds directly in TVPaint many background painters are more familiar with Photoshop , but you can easily import Photoshop .PSD files into TVPaint ... and also export artwork created in TVPaint as a .PSD file to take it into Photoshop. TVPaint has a special script available to Export your animation from TVPaint to After Effects, which keeps all of the layers and exposures intact. This allows for animating and coloring in TVPaint, then moving the whole scene over to After Effects to add additional compositing effects.)

Burn Out directed and animated by Cécile Carre , additional animation by Valentin Lucas (EFX Animation) and Joel Durand. Made at GOBELINS, l'école de l'image and California Institute of the Arts.

You can also use the keyboard arrow keys Right (forward) and Left (back) to go to Next Frame (Right) or Previous Frame (Left) or use CMD Right to Go To Next Drawing or CMD Left to Go To Previous Drawing . Note that Next Frame and Previous Frame may not be exactly the same thing as Next Drawing or Previous Drawing , depending on how many frames each drawing is exposed on the Timeline . If all your animation is ON ONES , then going from frame to frame is all you need , but if your have animation exposed ON TWOS or some of your drawings held for more frames , then you need to be able to advance to Next Drawing (not Next Frame) or Previous Drawing (not Previous Frame) .

SEE: "What Is An Instance?" in the TVPaint User Manual: "An instance is simply an image in an animation layer, an image whose duration can be adjusted on the Timeline." Another way of saying it is that an Instance is the first occurrence of a drawing, which may be exposed for any number of frames needed. Most animation drawings are exposed "On 2s" (two frames each) or "On 1s" (one frame each), but you can expose drawings (instances) for more frames if the character needs to pause or hold for timing purposes.

TVP Animation is a program compiled for graphic design and 2D animation. This program is intended fordrawing and animation enthusiasts. With its bitmap approach, its goal is to cover the main needs of theartist. It offers a complete range of high-performance tools, the parameters of which may be set, whetherfor the layman or the professional artist and yet still offers the creative feeling provided by pen andpaper.

TVP Animation is a bitmap software. The workflow differences between a bitmap-based and vector-based animation package have their advantages and disadvantages. While vector art excels as a medium for cutout animation and is resolution-independent it is difficult to reproduce the highly detailed spatter or grain patterns commonly found in traditional media. Bitmaps can represent natural art media more readily, although they are not resolution-independent, as aliasing or blurring artifacts become an issue when resizing a bitmap to a resolution greater than 100% of the total. High resolution projects are also memory intensive, presenting storage issues that are multiplied over each frame.

An animation software package presents the user with various tools to edit multiple (bitmap/vector) frames simultaneously (in the case of applying effects or for cutting/X-Sheet purposes) or in rapid succession. TVP Animation includes functions to allow the user to 'flip' a segment of the animation while working on individual frames to help the user feel the movement of the animation. There is also a function called a 'Light Table' which allows a user to see superimposed frames before and after the current frame. This function also goes under the name of "onion skinning" or "tracing paper" and is not unlike using tracing paper for an animation in real life.

2008 June 24: TVP Animation Standard and Pro 9 : TVP Animation 9.0 Standard Edition contains many improvement : the layer blending modes, the Panel Bin feature, the TimeLine Notes, the TVPX format, the Drawing Recorder... In addition to all those improvements, the Professional version allows to integrate numerous audio tracks, to mix layers with many blending modes and gets four separately customizable workspaces. Each workspace's panel layouts and hot keys can be customized to a different stage of your animation (for researches, storyboards etc..).

2007 May 28: TVP Animation Pro 8.5 : A major free update is released in June 2007. This update contains an instance system allowing you to easily time your animation, profiles on tool's connection for a custom behavior and new customizable interface look.

This version is dedicated for animators and allow them to create an animation from scratch to the end. Many improvements are made, such as supporting to the new Mac Intel, a rotative canvas like on a real drawing table, new drawing tools behavior, new special effects for saving time to the animators, etc...TVP Animation 8.1 is developed and distributed by TVPaint Développement.

2006 : TVPaint Animation -- TVPaint Developpement begins distributing their products under their own name. TVP Animation is dedicated to graphic creation and 2D animation. It is 100% compatible with MacIntel computers. New Effects : MultiPlane camera, Rotating project, Toon Shading, Add Border, Scan Cleaner, Lens Flare.

There are several demo videos and articles available which guides beginners through the different features of the TVPaint Animation software. There are upgrade bundles sold separately which contain extended features. These extended features will be convenient for someone looking to commit to animation production on a regular and long term basis.

This workshop course offers a complete basic knowledge of using TVPaint animation software to produce hand-drawn animation. Topics and techniques covered during lectures will be reinforced through in-class exercises and projects. Prerequisite(s): none (2 quarter hours)

How to Train Your Dog is a hand-drawn animation which was primarily created using the computer software TVPaint Animation. I did the concept design work in Adobe Photoshop, and the editing work was achieved in Adobe Premiere.
