Hi,
Does anyone know of software that is useable with the Bearcat BC-246T that will allow me to control/program the scanner using a screen reader? Are there other scanners that have software that is more accessible to a blind person?
Thanks,
Marshall

Heyya Marshall:
I currently know of no software which is accessible for programming a
scanner with a screen reader. I have been told, but, can't verify it or not.
That the software called Win Scann which works with the 246, 296, 396, 796,
780, 785 which are all recent Bearcat trunking models is accessible if you
are using a Mac. But not using the windows platform with JAWS, Window Eyes,
etc. I know that Ron & I both use PSR Edit which works with the GRE, PSR
models of radios. We both also currently are running PSR-500's programmed
with PSR Edit. Hope this answers your questions. If you have further, please
feel free to ask & we'll see where we can go from here.

Guess I should have clarified a bit here. When I say no software for
programming a Bearcat model of scanner.

Hi Scott.

I could be wrong about this but to programs I would look at are freescan
and BCTool.

I haven't used either in a good while but the older versions of BCTool
and newer versions of freescan were pretty useable.

Of course a premium radio reference subscription helps tremendously.

Thanks much Don:
I'll give both a look as well as I still have an older 780 over here on the
shelf in the traffic center for picking up some non trunking stuff that I
need to monitor for work. I need to do some updated programming on it.
Wished the 800 still worked on it. However for some reason or another the
800 side of that radio went deaf some years back.

One of the best low band receivers I've ever owned though.

Hi all,

New to the list and my first post. My name is Steve, ham call KW3A near
Philadelphia.

I would look at the Freescan software for the BC 246T. I've been out of
scanning for quite a while and picked up a BCT 15 about 5 years ago that
I never could figure out even with the Butel software i purchased at
the same time.

I blew the dust off it and figured I would try it with Freescan. It
seems to work ok with JAWS. The whole thing of groups, systems and all
that stuff still has me scratching my head, but I'm making progress.
The Virtual Control in Freescan works well, although the menus still
aren't clear to me.

While I don't have a Radio Reference subscription at this time, I did
program in a block of 25 500 mhz conventional freqs by using the E Z
Grab feature in Freescan. I cut and saved to clipboard police freqs
from my county from the RR web site, then pasted to E Z Grab, put it
into the software, then sent it to the scanner. All seems to be working
ok. I'll try some more when I get ambitious.

Freescan is supposed to work on the BC 246T as well, so I figured I'd
mention my experience.
