Hello everyone,
Thanks for staarting this list.
My name is Doug. My dog guide (Chumley) and I live in Redmond, WA, about 10 miles northeast of Seattle.
Back in 1990 or so, some of my fellow ham friends persuaded me to buy the Realistic Pro-2004, which Radio Shack was closing out at the time. I placed a few sticky dots on the membrane keypad to make it easier to operate. I enjoyed listening to the police/fire action in my small Ohio city, and I got a big kick out of searching just to see what I could find.
I still have that scanner, and it still works well and sounds great. I’m told the floro-luminescent display still works, too. (The displays tended to dim and eventualy fail with age.)
In the late 90’s, I bought a Bearcat BC 245XLT so I could monitor the trunked systems here in the Pacific Northwest. I didn’t enjoy using that radio very much. I think I was partly intimidated and confused by the very large simulcast King county trunked system, andI was never quite sure whether I had programmed the right talkgroups. Also, I was never quite sure when I was toggling a scanlist or an entire bank on or off. I just didn’t have enough vision to use the display effectively.
I now use a Pro-197 desktop scanner, with pSREdit 500 programming software. Thhis setup works well for me. The software makes the scanner easy to program (even if you don’t use the radio Referennce download service). There are a few quirks withg the radio, but I find it overall fairly easy to use and fun to listen to.
I look forward to getting to know all of you and participating on the list.
