Hello everybody,

this is ostensibly directed towards Sean but I wanted to ask it "in the clear" so that anybody else who's using PSREdit-500 might benefit from his expertise.

Sean, I've set up local fire/rescue objects in their own scan list. The system is a Motorola analog trunk system (though I doubt this is important in this instance). I want to change a talkgroup's setting to make it a priority object. I go to the Scanlist Listing tab, select the scanlist I want, go to the list of objects in that scanlist and arrow down to the one I want to make a priority object but cannot figure out how to make it a priority object.

Suggestions welcome.

Ron:
This was Kim's last weekend off before she rotates back around to her Monday-Tuesday's off for the next month. We've been handling allot of errands, etc this weekend. &, I've not been around the computer much until now. Let me play with this a bit & I'll get back to you & the list with a full report.

Alright Ron:
As promised, here comes a full report. As someone who doesn't use priority scanning, I had to look at it & play with it a bit, to make for sure that I new exactly how to do this. &, apparently I got it figured out. As, I made a couple of priorities, put them in my radio to make sure that they worked, then went back & put back in the scanning parameters that I normally use.
Ok, here goes.
1. Load your saved file which you're working with in to PSREdit. I do this simply by finding it in my documents & clicking on it. It automatically loads in PSREdit. 2. Since I'm on the general tab in PSREdit, I first find priority scanning on or off by tabbing 10 times, I first check this box to turn priority scanning on: I then tab once to the next box which is priority scanning interrupts talk group, I also check this box to turn this on: I then tab once to the next box which is marked ignore tone settings, I always leave this box checked, so I have to do nothing here: I tab once more which will allow you to set a number of channels to check per scan interval, since for this experiment, I placed 3 in it to check, I placed a 3 in this edit area: I then tab once more, this area will then allow you to set a time interval for your radio to check priority, I have no clue what the limits are here but I've been told they can be up to 120 seconds, for the sake of this experiment, I set mine to 4 seconds.
3. I then control tabbed until I landed in the area of PSREdit which is marked trunk objects tab: I then used my up & down arrows here until I located the system which I wanted to play with: I then shift tabbed 3 times until I landed on the list of talk groups which are associated with the system I'm currently playing with: I then used my up & down arrows here until I located the talk group I wanted to make priority: Once this was found, I then used my enter key to click on the talk group properties: I then tabbed down 3 times until I landed on the check box which said make this talk group priority, I then checked it: Once this was done, I tabbed until I found the apply button: Once the apply button was hit, you once again then land back in the list of talk groups associated with the system you're currently playing with: Since for the sake of this experiment, I wanted to make 2 more priority: I then used my up & down arrows as stated above until I located them, clicked on them, & found the check boxes & checked them: I remembered to hit the apply button each time: However, there is really no need to do so as PSREdit will go ahead & make any changes which you're attempting to make without having to do so: So, if you simply want to hit the escape key which will land you back in the list of talk groups, you are more than welcome to do so: However, I do so simply as a safety net.
4. Once all of the changes I wanted to make were made: I saved the file: Remember to save the file as a different file name if you're wanting to keep it separate from other saved scanner files which you have: I then uploaded it in to the radio. Walla , I turned the radio on & the 3 talk groups which I'd made priority talk groups were prioritized. Since for me, I didn't want to keep them as such, I then went back & uploaded in to my radio my normal scanning file & everything was back to the normal way that I normally have things.
Apologies for the long windedness of this email. However I wanted to give all of the steps which I used to accomplish my task. Hope that this helps Ron. &, if you need any further help, please feel free to write or call me.

Oh, btw.
You can also change the delay check time whilst actually in the talk group properties area as well. It is the next area right under the make this talk group priority. I'm going to try & see what happens if I change it here, put it in the radio & see what happens.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the great step-by-step. I paddled around in the pond as well and discovered the same process. It does seem to work well.

Here in Pinellas county, Sheriff’s Office provides police services to the majority of the cities in the county. In order to switch easily from city to city, I’ve placed each city in its own scan list. Dunedin, where I live, is a small town with pretty light radio traffic, I want to monitor Fire/EMS and other cities but still have my city interrupt other traffic so I don’t miss the less frequent calls in my own town. Priority makes this possible.

Best regards

Hi Sean, I haven't messed much with the PSR edit software, mainly
just load files into my scanner that I get from a fellow ham who
sets it up for me. but this might encourage me to try some
stuff. The guy who sends me files is sighted so doesn't know how
to address navigation issues by using tab, shift tab, etc. So
your explanation is great. Thanks much. Jim WA6EKS

First off:
Ron:
I'm glad that swimming around got you where you were trying to go. I can see
advantages to using priority. &, I used to use it quite frequently when all
scanning was just simply on conventional frequencies. However, I've noticed
when you try to use it whilst trunking. It will really slow your scanning
down. It will also cause your scanner to have difficulty locking down on a
control channel if you're monitoring more than one trunking system. I'm not
saying you're wrong for using it & I can see some advantages for doing so.
If it works for you. Good deal.
Jim:
The best thing to do with PSREdit is just get in there & fool around with
it. If you've got the file that you normally use saved. Load it up & play
with it a bit. Nothing lost nothing gained as you can always go back & put
it in the radio. When I first got my 500 & PSREdit, I started from scratch &
built out my file just the way that I wanted it. This is the advantage to
these scanners & having PSREdit. We're not dependant on anyone for our radio
programming. We get to do it ourselves. One of the other things which I did
when I first got PSREdit was read the help file which comes with it & is
very accessible with JAWS. There is allot of good & helpful information in
it. Also, if you run in to any issues with it whilst you're playing around
with it. Just ask here. I'd say that Ron & I are proficient enough with it
to get you out of any troubled waters you might get in to. How'd you like
that Ron? I brought us right back to the pond... Also we can all get
together some evening or on the weekend on skype & talk about it.
73 for now.

Ah life in the pond is pretty fine, too.

I still want to set up a SKYPE conference for that. It's just a matter of
getting scheduling to work out for all of us. I've got family (son,
daughter-in-law and soon to be born grandson) moving back to Florida next
month and work has me busy in the office and traveling, so it's crazy around
here as we get our house ready for long term visitors (we want them to get
their own apartment as soon as they can, of course) and work duties. We'll
figure it out and set a time, though.

Thanks for the tip about the cons of priority scanning trunked systems. I've
noticed that my priority channels on the Pinellas county analog system don't
get locked onto often when I'm listening to the Clearwater EDACS system, but
I'll keep trying different combinations of stuff.

Jim, play with your scanner and the software. I'll field questions as I can.
I'm trying to maintain a pretty good presence on this list, so ask away.

Best to everyone on the list.

Ron Miller

Hi, I recorded a file of the SCA flying by my location this morning with
Shuttle Endeavour on top of the 747. The file is about 19 minutes long and
is mainly myself wife, and friends talking along with some ham traffic about
the flyby. The actual flyby happens fairly near the end of the file. I
recorded it from a friends deck in the Berkeley hills using a Plextalk
Pocket and a single point audio technique 822 mic. Just thought some here
might find it interesting. Jim WA6EKS
