to Monitor Change
Hi Everyone,

we have been contacted by a school district in New Zealand about helping them implement STEM activities in their elementary schools.  I think Picture Post is a great program for that in the area of environmental education, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a photo monitoring program in New Zealand, or if anyone is interested in starting a program?

many thanks,
-Annette Schloss

HI Everyone
I've been working in the field of community-based environmental restoration and monitoring for the last decade or so (this is also the subject of my current PhD) so I have a pretty good handle on what is happening around the country. To my knowledge, there are no formal programmes underway however there are numerous kits available for non-specialist users to help them monitor various ecosystems. Guidelines for example are included in the Wetlands Monitoring and Assessment kit (Module 2) and to help groups, we created a short, cheap and cheerful clip about setting up photopoints http://www.landcare.org.nz/wetmak/hub

Photopoints are one of most widely used methods among community environmental groups, but these tend to be for the groups' own purpose i.e. to assist with funding applications and for educational/management purposes rather than to demonstrate broad-scale change e.g. across a region.

Kind regards,
Monica

Hi, Monica,

Both Picturepost and PhotoPoints are wonderful tool. Just for your information, we have Geo-Referenced Field Photo Library (http://www.eomf.ou.edu/photos/) and smartphone app "Field Photo” available to the community. It can be used to collect geo-referenced field photos to document landscapes, including agricultural drought, phenology.

Best regards,

Xiangming

Thanks, Monica -

if you have an interest in connecting photo monitoring to STEM education, I'd love to chat!

Thanks Xiangming for highlighting our nice programs - I'm going to check out your app (Picture Post has an app for the iPhone, too)!

see you,
-Annette
