Assomeone who draws literally hundreds of roofs per year, I can appreciate the methods here, but I can do in 5 seconds what some of you claim takes several minutes at least. The Instant Roof plugin changed my life. It does both gable and hip roofs, and even does mansard roofs, dutch gables, and more. As for the flexibility, it is excellent. You can always just explode the resulting geometry and adjust things to your liking. If you need an exact profile for a gutter or something, the Profile Builder 2 plugin is your answer.

If you insist on doing it the "old fashioned way, there is an easier way. Extend your profiles further up where the width of the profile is at least as long as half of the longest wall. Then use the follow me tool. No you can select all roof geometry and do Intersect With Model. Then delete the extra geometry, which is far easier than extending hip lines.

Hi Guys, nice work Cris it is helpful, I like what you have done thanks. I do have another alternative that is very very quick and parametric. I will try and make it a GIF yet here is a quick video that I did on the same shape

This is only a very small part of PlusSpec, essentially we made SketchUp perform like the top 2 BIM companies in the world. I am a designer and builder (24 years) and I needed Sketchup to do the grunt work for me so I could show clients the intention of the design and use the same model for documentation and specification of products. There is a US version on our website. If anyone is confused by BIM or VDC this may help explain it. I hope it helps.

It's easy to learn. Chuck (the script's author) has put together a huge pile of fantastic instructional PDFs and videos on his website. The in-product help is also comprehensive and well-placed.

It's easy to use. Everything's right there in the Plugins menu, so you don't have to memorize and keep track of a bunch of little tool icons. The input method for telling the script where to put gables and sheds couldn't be simpler.

To use Instant Roof, you select a face and choose Plugins > Instant Roof > Make Roof. In the following image, I chose to use the California Ranch roof style:

Jeremy, not sure what happened to your download, I just downloaded the script, installed it and in less than 5 minutes, I had a roof. I use SU7 free. Try again just draw a simple rectangle then select the top face, go to plugins menu click instant roof, pick a style, and OK the default settings work fine for now.

Sketchup can be a very versatile tool for our architectural visualizations, but somehow it lacks of some features that can be used for a quicker modelling time, mostly because the software itself is all-use oriented instead of an architectural one.

1001bit tools is a plugin that for us is a must. It works as a collection of tools designed for creating of several architectural elements. From roofs to railings, windows, staircases, roof design. Also it has some tools for drawing/editing geometry such as fillet, extend and chamfer that native Sketchup lacks.

One useful tool for organic shapes is Best Fit Face, where after creating non-coplanar points you can then pick the series of points for double clicking to create a face containing those points as part of the edges of that face.

Wall tools are a simple-step solution than the Sketchup way of building walls. Instead of drawing and extruding planes, you can choose a type of wall, adjust parameters and done! Also it is really helpful for applying details to your walls, such as baseboards.

In this case, this plugin is focused on making roofs from selected faces and edges. The possibilities are infinite, as they depend both on which kind of roof you want to make and also how is the geometry that you created for hosting that roof.
