An opera window is a small fixed window usually behind the rear side window of an automobile.[1] They are typically mounted in the C-pillar of some cars.[2] The design feature was popular during the 1970s and early 1980s and adopted by domestic U.S. manufacturers, most often with a vinyl roof.[2]

The origin was from "opera" vehicles of around 1915 with occasional collapsible seating for extra passengers.[3] The opera window was also a feature on "formal roof" and limousine models with higher than a normal roof to accommodate passengers with top hats.[3]

The design element of a distinct, fixed, centered opera window was borrowed from such windows in horse-drawn carriages and used during the classical era of automobile styling. For example, "the Elcar in 1924 was good looking ... and even a fabric top in the style of a brougham with oval opera windows framed by landau bars".[4] Opera windows saw their demise in the 1930s.

Opera windows began reappearing in the early 1970s in such vehicles as the 1972 Continental Mark IV. Almost all personal luxury cars would adopt opera windows, usually framed by a vinyl roof.[6] Most often, opera window variants were applied on two-door hardtop or coup models, spanning all types of vehicles from economy compacts to flagship personal luxury cars, in which latter exploding realm they became "recognition elements" seeking to add a vintage element to their styling.[7] General Motors introduced an all-new line of mid-sized "Colonade" models for the 1973 model year. Standard on all the coupes was a fixed triangular rear quarter window while higher trim versions used a rectangular vertical opera window.[8]

The windows were intended to offset the significant blind spots created by wide C-pillars that were characteristic of many American cars produced at this time.[9] In an age of decreasing dimensions and increasingly common use of non-opening rear side windows on 2-door models, a variety of shapes of rear windows may have helped passengers there to feel somewhat less claustrophobic.[citation needed]

These windows were usually non-functional; however, in the case of the AMC Matador coupe NASCAR racers, the standard roll-down quarter windows were causing aerodynamic drag.[10][11] Penske racing requested AMC a small "porthole" to smooth the airflow when open to the wind under racing conditions.[12] To qualify as a stock item for use on the tracks, NASCAR required 500 units must be available to the public.[11] The small opera window was first an optional "D/L Formal Window Package" on the Brougham models and then a standard feature on the Barcelona II trim package.[11][13][14]

Cookies are small data files that store information in connection with a website. For example, a cookie may be created to store the contents of a shopping basket or to confirm that you are logged in as you browse the pages of a site.

Cookies can also be used to construct a profile of your browsing habits and are therefore regarded by some as a privacy issue. Setting cookie preferences gives you control of how Opera handles them. The default setting is to accept all cookies. To set your cookie preferences:

Type [*.] before the domain name to create an exception for an entire domain name. Creating an [*.]opera.com cookie exception will apply to pages such as blogs.opera.com and addons.opera.com. IP addresses can also be added as exceptions.

JavaScript is a scripting language used to add functions to pages, such as manipulating browser windows. In rare cases, JavaScript may be used intrusively to perform certain actions you may find annoying. For these cases, you can turn it off completely. If you do, some pages will not work as designed. To change JavaScript settings:

Some sites may ask to use your location to provide localized features, such as reviews for nearby shops or coupons from businesses located in your area. To do this, these sites may ask you to allow geolocation on the page. You can choose whether or not to share your location when browsing. Opera will not share this information without your permission.

If you connect a musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) device to your computer, such as a keyboard or controller, some sites and web apps may ask to have exclusive access to the device. For example, a developer may make a new synthesizer available on the web that you can use with your keyboard.

Opera will try to distinguish pop-ups that you have requested (login pages, for example) from pop-ups launched automatically from websites, such as advertising. By default, Opera will block pop-ups you have not requested. You can control how Opera handles pop-ups. To change pop-up settings:

Is there a way I can retrieve my closed window with all the tabs? I cannot see them in the history either, probably because when I switched on my PC the Internet connection was down and the pages didn't load.

Opera periodically saves a backup of your session between restarts. If you are quick enough, you can retrieve the backup before it is overwritten. Don't open or close any more tabs in Opera until you do the following.

On Windows, have a look at "%APPDATA%\Opera\Opera\sessions\". If you are using a different installation directory or you are on a different operating system, you will have to find your profile path. Type "opera:about" into your address bar.

Remember, next time, you should carefully backup your sessions using "Opera Menu > Tabs and Windows > Sessions > Save This Session..." or "Right click inside of the Bookmarks Manager > Bookmark All Open Pages".

I opened it in Notepad++ and found all the URL's that were in the lost session. There was a lot of garbage and url duplication, but it let me recover months of research and work resources that I thought I had lost. Just search the file for "http" and copy/paste the appropriate stuff into the browser.

If autosave.win.bak doesn't contain your session either, try to recover as soon as possible the most recent (and biggest) autosave.win in ..\Opera\Opera\sessions directory using an undelete program (e.g. Recuva).

Opera does not retain a log of closed tabs or windows so I could not reopen closed windows that contained about 20 tabs. However, I could see tabs and windows I closed by "user action" that took place before and after the forced restart of Opera browser.

I tested the scenarios by installing and uninstalling Office to cause system reboot while other chromium browsers were running: including Google Chrome and Yandex Browser. They both lost non-user closed tabs and windows.

I've been struggling with this issue for years, and Opera out of the box just doesn't support this, so if you're reading this having lost all your tabs, unless you have a backup of the correct folders in %appdata%\Opera Software\Opera Stable\ and can overwrite the existing profile you are out of luck.

However, I have very fortunately discovered that one of my plugins "The great suspender" - which enables me to keep tabs in the browser which don't consume resources - automatically keeps backups of your sessions and can reopen them!

With the upcoming Arm-based processors for PC just around the corner, Opera is committed to deliver the best possible experience on all Windows devices available. This ensures that users have a cutting-edge choice for their desktop browser while using their PCs powered by Snapdragon.

Machines powered by Snapdragon offer significantly better battery life, keeping you browsing longer on a single charge. This game-changing advantage comes from the power-efficient design of the processors. Their unique reduced instruction set (RISC) is optimized for streamlined performance resulting in a more efficient system that provides longer battery life and cooler operating temperatures.

*Opera benchmarked the optimized browser using Speedometer, a widely popular benchmark for web browsers. The resulting scores indicated over four times faster speeds than those in the emulated version of the browser.

With Microsoft ending support for Windows 7 and 8.1, and Chromium following suit, the end of support extends to all major browsers on these versions of the operating system. So from now on all major browsers, including Opera, will no longer get security and feature updates if used on those versions of Windows. Older versions of Opera will, however, continue to work on Windows 7 or 8.1.

End of support for an OS is usually a good indication that it might be time to upgrade. At this point, any security vulnerabilities, bugs, and other issues that developers would otherwise have been able to address, will no longer be fixed. This puts your device and personal data at potential risk.

So you can start by checking if your device supports a software upgrade to the latest Windows OS. Windows 11, the current version, has certain hardware requirements that make it difficult for older computers to qualify. However, Windows 7 and 8.1 users can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free, and that version is still supported by Microsoft. The company provides a handy guide on how to upgrade here.

Then again, it might be that your computer is getting on in years too. Most new Windows PCs these days have Windows 11 pre-installed, so with a new desktop or laptop computer you should be set for some time to come.
