Not a month goes by that I don't see a story in the media about the "serious decline" of DVD. While revenues have dropped a bit each year, it's still the largest revenue generating segment/market of the movie industry, coming in at $15.6 Billion last year (dropping only slightly from the previous year), which is 35% more than Theatrical Box Office revenues. Stories about the death of DVD are quite premature.
If you are preparing a business plan for raising money for your film, you
must include the Blu-ray/DVD market & potential revenues in your plan. And if you're in post-production or currently looking for distribution, do
not discount the Blu-ray/DVD market. This market will continue to generate major, significant revenues for
at least some years to come.
For those that haven't "Liked" my Film Distribution Facebook Page -- and missed this post recently -- here's the breakdown of existing brick & mortar stores handling disc rental & sell-through, and the current count of kiosks. (Kiosks, of course, are harder to get into for independent films without names, but some do.)
53,194 - Total of all stores & kiosks that sell or rent Blu-rays/DVDs.
Breaking this out:
2,526 - Major Chain Stores
4,910 - Mom & Pop Video Stores + Supermarkets
45,758 - Kiosks
And of course, this doesn't include the avenues you have for selling Blu-rays/DVDs online, either at existing point-of-sale sites, via marketing partners, and/or through your own marketing campaigns.
