Best practice for migrating from array of Embedded Documents to an array of Object Refs

I currently have an array of embedded documents in one of my schemas and it turns out it would have been better to have it as object refs. How can I make the change and migrate existing documents so that the array is converted from embedded docs to object refs for the existing data?
