Dear EITI Analyzers,

I fear that I haven’t been clear enough about the kind of analysis that I’m trying to encourage you to do.

For a fairly approachable version of what I have in mind, see Charles Ragin’s "The Comparative Method". In this book, Ragin tries to formalize comparison for causal inference. I am not suggesting that you go as far as Boolean algebra and a truth table, but I do think that if you treat a categorization of sub-national reporting as an outcome, the other variables you have been collecting will serve at least as suggestions as to what might be causing this outcome which will add some punch to a summary of your 14 country cases.

Cheers,
Julian Dierkes

Hi Julian,

I managed to get my hands on Ragin's book today, are you referring to where he talks about "heterogeneity and causal complexity" and "case-oriented comparative methods" in Chapters 2 - 3 of his book?

Also, are you looking for us to ask and possibly find answers to some casual questions that we agree upon to investigate?

For those not necessarily familiar with causal analysis please have a look at the attachments.

Thanks,
Carlos
