Dear EITI Projecterers!

As the subject line states: we’re going to Ulaanbaatar!

On separate business, Christina and I are heading to Ulaanbaatar for a conference May 4/5 anyway, so we’ve scrambled to come up with additional funding to send at least a small group of you along to present your work.

The proposal would be that
- the policy group present to Khan Bank/EITI making a case for a collaboration (pending their interest/agreement)
- the academic paper group make one or a couple of presentations on their findings.

That would suggest a deadline for both the groups of around Apr 30, so that those making the presentation in Ulaanbaatar or contributing to it have about a week to get the presentations ready for May 6/7.

Funding/planning:
- Christina and I are funded separately.
- MAAPPS: We have $5,000 to be divvied up. When we’ve been looking recently, fares vary from $1,300 - $2,600 depending on dates, but I hope we can stretch the $5,000 to find three of you, if there are three who would like to/could go. The first step thus is to hear who would be interested/able to go.
- Mining Engineering: We have $5,000 from CIRDI to be divvied up. I would strongly suggest that Bulgan join the group as she would be very helpful with logistics and language, obviously. That would leave further funding for 1-2 of you to join. Again, who would like to/could go?

In the interest of maximum transparency, perhaps easiest if everyone expresses their interest/availability to the group.

Some Caveats:
If more people want to go than we can fund, we could either fund partially (meaning you’d have to pick up costs yourself) or have to somehow select. Let’s talk about that after we know who would like to/could go.

If we send 3 people from both, MAAPPS and Mining Engineering, that will likely mean that we’ll only be able to cover airfare. Last year’s group stayed at the Ulaanbaatar Guest House, and I think that was US$30/night. Other than airport pick-up there would be no transportation costs locally. Food is relatively cheap, but you’d want to budget around $40-$50/day, I imagine.

The funding would most likely come as reimbursements and that can be a laborious process, so you would have to carry the credit card charge for some weeks before you would get a reimbursement.

Cheers,
Julian Dierkes

Dear class,

I am interested in going to present the publication we are working on. If many others would like to go however, I am more than happy to stay behind, although this would certainly be a great opportunity.

Let's hear who is interested.

Jon

Dear Jon,

to move along toward concrete planning, what dates would you be available? Any constraints?

I am interested in going. But I am planning internship details with my host organization and we will have everything finalized by Friday this week. If there is no time conflict, I would love to contribute to and present our group project. Meanwhile, if there is more than three that want to go, I'd be happy to stay behind as well.

Cheers,
Lotus

Sending joy!

Dear EITI Team,

Would be more than happy to present our findings in Mongolia. I'll have my May schedule sorted out by the end of this week. More than happy to figure out a compromise if more than 3 of us plan to go.

Looking forward to the conversation

Cheers,
Justin

Thanks for the opportunity, Julian.

As much as I would be quite pleased to join you and the others I'm already committed to be in Montreal during that time to take part in the upcoming CIM AGM. That said, if I can be of assistance in helping to prepare for your group trip do let me know.

Cheers,
Carlos

Dear all,

Very excited that we are able to present in Mongolia, hoping to see as many of you there as possible :) I just heard back from last year's group regarding accommodation. They stayed at UB Guesthouse in a dormitory and only payed 8 USD per night, the prices haven't changed. I believe it would be cheaper than renting an airbnb apartment for all of us, since prices there are between 70-90 CAD per 3-4 bed apartment.

Cheers,
Christina

Dear all,

After careful reflection, I would really like to go to Mongolia. I can pay up to $500 for this trip.

How can we organize the trip so that no one feels they are missing out?

I took this class for the experience of travelling to Mongolia.

Can we apply to Graduate Student Travel Fund?

Hi Everyone,

My apologies for the slow response:  I did my PhD comprehenisve exam today and am just catching up.

If there is funding specific for mining engineering, I would be interested in joining you.  In the interest of transparency I want to note that I am auditing the course so understand if that precludes me from the trip.  In addition, I fully support the suggestion that Bulgan join the group and would want to make sure her costs were covered first.

I look forward to hearing how the trip takes shape and, as others have said, even if I don't join you, I am very happy to work with the group that goes to prepare the various presentations/materials.

Best regards,

Jocelyn
