The following error started to happen to me with no apparent reason. I've upgraded from Mongo 2.2 tp Mongo 2.4, but the same error is happening only
that at line database.cpp:300.
This happens on an Ubuntu machine, not sure if this matters. I'm using the the java client for working with the databse.

The following error is shown in the mongo log:

Thu Jan  9 12:22:02 [conn1] error: getFile() called in a read lock, yet file to return is not yet open
Thu Jan  9 12:22:02 [conn1]        getFile(3) _files.size:3 /mnt/my-data/mongodb/test.3
Thu Jan  9 12:22:02 [conn1]        context ns: test.generaltestresult openallfiles:1
Thu Jan  9 12:22:02 [conn1]  test.generaltestresult Assertion failure false src/mongo/db/database.cpp 257

Have not found any solution, if anyone has any idea ?
The same error happens if I issue the query from the mongo client .

This looks like it happens on startup?   I would recommend increasing the log level on your 'mongod' and see if there is more information that will show up in the logs (well, I know it will, but I mean useful information).

Other useful information would be: what OS is this, what file/storage system?

By any chance are you running the 32bit version of MongoDB? If so you may be running into the 2GB data limit and should look to run 64bit (as detailed in the "Notes" section of http://www.mongodb.org/downloads
