safe to run 1.6.2 master with 1.4.3 slaves?

I have to do a rolling upgrade across my servers. Is it safe to have a mix of 1.6 and 1.4 servers in a master/slave configuration where the master is 1.6.2?

While it might be the recommended way is to upgrade slaves first then master. We test that direction for backwards compatibility.
