Lots of socket exceptions with profiling on lvl 2

When I turn up the logging level I am seeing a lot of socket exception message. 
error: 9001 socket exception
What does this mean? Is the there a problem on the application side? 
I have ran long running pings between severs and verified the network is working fine.
