Yes,

I've passed both C100DEV and C100DBA exams.

I recommend you to take a look to Mongo University courses in case you are planning to take any exam, as well as reading its great online documentation.

Regards,

Hi Jorge,

Can you tell more about the level of questions, the number of questions and passing percentage for the exam as there are no marks reduced for wrong answers.

Thanks

Hi Prachi,

When you sign up for a MongoDB University Certification you will also have access to a Certification Exam Study Guide: https://university.mongodb.com/certification/study-guide. This includes topics and study material to review in preparation for the exam.

I recommend completing the relevant MongoDB University DBA or Developer course prior to signing up for the certification exam.

    Hello,

I've just taken the C100DEV test yesterday after doing the M101J online course about a month ago and scoring full marks. This is my feedback, I hope it doesn't come out simply as a rant.
I was kind of surprised in a negative way the mismatch between the level and contents of the course material and the exam. It's not about the exam being more difficult than the course, which I understand it should be, not hugely but a bit more, but it's more about the expectations that are set for the effort necessary to achieve certification.

When you finish the course you are lead to believe that you're pretty much ready for the cert, like you only need to review the course contents and go into a little bit more detail in a few things like aggregation and perhaps replica sets and sharding. But in my experience this is far from the truth.

First problem is that the course material is quite old so it doesn't cover any stuff newer that v3.0 but the exam covered 3.4 and this is not clearly stated. In the study guide you're given pointers to the documentation and some video links. You can tell that there are three types of videos: the old ones which cover basic stuff that hasn't changed, the not so old ones but still about v3.0 or older and some, very few, new ones that look done very recently but still don't cover much of the new stuff.
Then there is the recommended book "MongoDB The Definitive Guide" 2nd ed. by Kristina Chodorow which is from 2013 and I believe it's based on v3.0...

So the information is really scattered around many sources, the new stuff it's really dealt with in the documentation only and there's no clear path for preparing for the exam.

I'm not claiming to be an expert but I"m not a noob either, I'm a senior Java developer who's been working on a MongoDB based application for more than a year (no previous contact with MongoDB before I joined the project).

All together makes it a mixed-bag experience.

Dani, thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry you had a mixed-bag experience.

We are in the process of replacing the DBA and Developer tracks with more modular offerings. The last course to complete the DBA track is in development now and due to open for registration later this month. Once rolled out, the DBA track will include M001: MongoDB Basics (available now), M103: Basic Replication and Sharding (opens for reg in a few weeks), M201: MongoDB Performance (available now), and M310: MongoDB Security (available now). M102 will be retired.

Similarly, we will begin to retire the M101 courses in April. The Dev track will share some of the same courses as the DBA track with additional courses on application development and data modeling.

Finally to address a couple of your points:
    - M101J does contain material beyond 3.0, though much of it was recorded with that version of MongoDB. Discrepancies between the current version and previous versions are clearly called out and there are relatively short courses that outline differences between all versions. These are: M032, M034, and M036. Agreed, however, that it does need updating. Again, we will begin releasing new developer courses in April.
    - We do stress the importance of the study guide in all certification messaging, repeatedly.
    - We do call out the MongoDB version on which the exam is based on the registration page. Perhaps we can do more to stress that.

Again, thanks for the feedback. I will ensure it is communicated to the rest of the team.

    Shannon,

You are indeed listening :-) I wasn't sure it was going to get any attention in the slack channel, too much noise so I also posted here, hope you didn't take it in a bad way, not my intention (English is not my mother tongue so these things are difficult to tune appropriately in a foreign language). I was also interested in other people's experiences.

Yep, true, the link you posted actually has a mention to the version but really, I went to check again it and I actually had to search for string "3.4" with the browser find facility... I could not see scanning through the text. I mean you go to that page, as seen on the attached screenshot, and there's a lot of stuff, you start reading and scrolling and it's gone since it's right at the top in a smallish font compared to the rest, easy to miss or maybe is just me.
And the guide... I couldn't find anything referring to the version explicitly. So if you missed the previous mention... that's it.

Anyway, my feedback was trying to be more general not only focused on this.

    Best regards,

    Dani

    Hi Dani,

Congratulations for passing the exam with a great score!

I am supposed to take this exam in a few weeks. The study guide is the only material that I am referring to, to prepare for the exam. I do not have any prior experience either. After reading your feedback I am a little concerned about the version mismatch. Is this exam tough to pass only by referring to the study guide? could you clarify, please?

    Thanks

    Dani

    Hello Sarah,

Regarding the MongoDB version just make sure you take note of the version number indicated at the top of the exam page for the date of your test, eg. for March 2018: https://university.mongodb.com/certification/developer/about?offering=C100DEV/2018_March it says "3.4". I realised about it too late and it seems it's the only place it's clearly stated: nor the exam purchase confirmation email nor the study guide mention this at all... at least when prepared for my test. Btw, I think after March it changes to version 3.6!

As for the study guide, it's ok as long as you are aware that completing the M101 course only gives you a 60 to 70% coverage of the stuff needed for the cert. Just make sure you cover everything on it and perhaps expand in some areas like CRUD, aggregations, indexing, sharding, replication... The problem with expanding this is that for the newer stuff -CRUD/agg operations mostly- you only have the official doc. The recommended book I believe it only goes up to v3.0 but there might be other resources out there, you'll need to research a bit.

    Good luck,

    Dani

Just to expand your point Danny about the study guide, I think I only got access to the study guide once I had paid the money for the exam, by which time I was committed to a Month slot so it does feel a little disappointing that the coverage of the course vs the exam is not made clear before you purchase/commit.
