3D Creature Development is a creative process that evolves a design by taking advantage of modern 3D tools and techniques. This Master Class introduces the student to the entire pipeline, while exploring form, looks and behavior. Along the way we focus on the experience of working on a project where our work must regularly be presented to an art director or client, while also keeping in mind that the workflow should allow for an iterative approach. This requires an emphasis on speed and efficiency. Projects are never done, they are due. You can tweak things forever, but in the end your work just needs to satisfy the demands of the project, client or specific shot that the work is being made for. With this in mind, all of my techniques are based on a workflow that allows me to spend as little, or as much time, as I have been given. For this creature project, the deadline was one day for each of the seven stages of development: Design, Modeling and UV Layout, Digital Sculpting, Look-Development, Texturing and Shaders, Rigging and Posing, Animation and Live-Action Integration.
This master class will cover all processes of creative development, starting with the script and ending with a resolved design and presentation. Neville will be sharing philosophies regarding creature design and techniques that will allow for new ways of seeing.

What Students Gain from Animals &Creatures: Master Class?
Animals & Creatures: Master Class introduces students to the basics of animal and creature animation and explores it deeper in the second part of the series. Each weekly class features a video lecture by industry professional.
Then the second session transitions to fantasy creatures and vfx-style animation while adopting the same real world principles from the first session. "We have three new characters in the overall program: a cat, an ogre and a dragon," Beck explains. "We went out into the real world and filmed a bunch of live-action plates and then matchmoved those plates and created environments inside the computer, so we can have our students have their characters fully interacting in those environments. That is what the second class is all about: best practices for the industry."
From historical battles to beloved fantasy settings, adaptation runs through the heart of the video games industry. And not superficially either. In this master class, try your hand at adaptation and learn how adaptation can serve as the vital thread binding the different aspects of a game into a singular and potent experience. While storytelling will certainly be a focus, be prepared to consider the concept of adaptation more broadly: as historical recreation, as simulation, and in terms of abstract design theory.
Graphics heavy applications (games, mostly) are hungry creatures. They tend to eat up whatever memory, power, CPU & GPU time you throw at them and still want more. The brute force approach to improving performance is to buy better hardware, but what if you're a broke college student and stuck with the system you have for the near future or perhaps you're a developer who cares about the broke college student? This class aims to give you an introduction to the typical approach and types of tools used to profile and improve graphics application performance.

For the 2022 series, we do not plan any sign-up procedure. All participants that are online when Lecture I starts will be admitted to the Zoom meeting. They will then receive the invitation for the Slack channel and for Lecture II. Masterclasses are independent of each other, so that you will be able to pick those that you are interested in. The Slack workspace contains a separate private channel for each masterclass (e.g. masterclass-22-1 will be the channel hosting the first masterclass of the 2022 series). If this is not your first masterclass, your user will be added to the relevant channel and you will be notified directly on Slack. More technical information will be made available later.
The Jodie Foster Masterclass then takes a slightly more practical focus than the Martin Scorsese Masterclass, tracking the development of a short film to show how a director works. Jodie Foster explains how the inspiration for the idea came from her personal experience.
