During my free trial period i had a document that i've amended and saved several times. the free period has ceased and i tried to open the document and an window appears stating the file is damaged (error code 4). this happens with every document that i open. i've paid today to have indesign for the year and the documents still will not open and still gives the error code 4 window. Help.
Thank you, you're a godsend for giving a solution so quickly. Saved my bacon today. I needed to edit a poster i had for our local one act festival that had to be printed today, so the solution came just in time.
I am experiencing the same problem. I've just upgraded to Adobe InDesign CC 2018 and now ALL my files located on my MacBook Pro are coming up with the Error 4. There was nothing boring with them yesterday while I was still running the 2017 version. What's the problem?
There is nothing wrong with your files. This seems to be a bug in InDesign 2017 AND NOW 2018! It happens to me all the time. I close a file that I've been working on, open another, try to open the one I've just closed, and guess what? "File is damaged: error code 4" I would be worried about this if it didn't happen all the time! Just restart InDesign, and all your files will magically re-open again. Please fix this bug Adobe...
Same problem in our agency. Working with InDesign is very difficult. I've deinstalled InDesign three times this week. After deinstalling and installing again everything works fine. But how long? One day?! Please fix this bug! We pay you a lot of money and it seems to me, that the Cloud Version causes a lot of problems since the launch. We have massive problems with dreamweaver, too...
Please fix this! Now I had the first time that saving my changes isn't possible any more, because InDesign said the file is broken... So do I have to save every minute because your upgraded program hast this dirty bug?!
I had this problem just now too - a nice way to start the week! Removed and reinstalled the app, and now I can access the file. I'm going back to 2017 until Adobe releases a bug fix. I never had this happen with CC 2017.
I'm on a MacPro (late 2013) using 10.13.1. It's only happened once, and I was able to open the file by reinstalling InDesign. I kept the last version of ID and am using that for larger, more complex documents until Adobe issues a bug fix.
Still receiving error code 4 message upon opening one indd file. I removed and re-installed ID; I closed and restarted ID prior...no benefit. Initially file would not load stating database error...then after the reinstallation of ID, it began with the error code 4 msg. I was unable to read the file with INCopy...is there a way to pull out the text from within the file by other means? Is there a way to see the image names used so far in the creation of this 200 page document?
I'm having issues with InDesign. Actually, I've had issues for a long time. My files keep getting damaged. Error code 0 when trying to save, Error code 4 when trying to open damaged files. I am not working from a hard drive or any external storage.
Now, before anyone goes suggesting I update InDesign, I want to say this has happened with CS6, CC 14, CC17 (might have also happened with CS4 and CC15/15.5, but I can't remember for sure). Like I said, I've had this issue for a while. It used to be pretty rare; would only happen maybe once or twice a year. But now, as I just updated to CC 2017, it's happening more frequently.
There are multiple factors both internal and external to InDesign application that can lead to document corruption. However, I can take a look and see if the file can be repaired. Please email your InDesign file to corrupt_in...@adobe.com and I will take a look at the document.
I'm having the exact same problem, but with InDesign CC 2018 (just downloaded last week). Every file I have modified or created now has either an Error 0 (if it's open) or an Error 4 if it was previously saved, but now won't open. It's driving me crazy!!! Please help. I'm on a Macbook Pro using High Sierra 10.13.1.
I am currently having the same issue. It is with files that I save and try to open hours later. It is to the point where I can't even open folders to even get to in InDesign file or any file for that matter. It is affecting my class assignments. I do not understand how a file could be damaged if I'm still working on it. I tried to go through my time machine for older files and even they will not open. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
I'm currently having the same issue. I was attempting to save a final revision, it's now midnight and last save was at 1121pm... nothing on my device has changed that I'm aware of. This spontaneously just occurred out of the blue.
Ran into this problem on 8-4-13. I "logged off" my iMac, logged back on, and while it rebooted, InDesign6 splash showed up, along with name of my Error Code 4 file. When the reboot completed, InDesign was open but the file wasn't. It opened nicely, though, and seems stable. Whatever happened, the file also was slimmed from 7.5 MB to 5.5 MB, so something nasty was removed.
Adobe Indesign CS6 has issues, Adobe says not but only reaffirms with posts like this. We still have a problem here with Indesign and students opening files and getting an error code 4 or error code 5. Quit Indesign and open it again and the files are fine. If you keep trying opening and closing the files it eventually happens again with the error.
That wasn't "Adobe" suggesting there's a configuration problem in the other thread, it was me, and I stand by that. Yes, there are some users who seem to have this problem, but it is a VERY small percentage of users. Are you working across a network?
Some files are on a network, but are supposed to be dragged to the local computer and then worked on. Students usually keep the files on their external Hard Drives. I had two users today one using network only and the other using her Hard Drive and both had error code 4 and couldn't open the files.
No issues with any other program except for Indesign CS 6. Indesign CS 5.5 worked fine. Looking at that video explain to me how you can open files continuously fine in the same session then all of sudden Indesign starts reporting the files are corrupt and give the error code 4 or 5. Quitting Indesign and then opening the files again they miracalously work again. _QxM3wc
I cannot explain it, because I don't know where those files are stored, though it doesn't look like it's onthe local hard drive, which implies a read error. Those things happen on networks and external hard drives all the time.
There are reported problems with opening files using a double-click on the file icon, as shown in the video, and for the most part they seem to open fine if you open ID first and use File > Open. Have you and your students tried that? Off the top of my head I don't recall what, if any, causes for that behavior have been identified, but again, it is NOT a common enough problem to suspect a bug over system configuration issues or software conflicts of some sort.
I have this same issue, in average once a day. I get the error and once I close and reopen ID, the file opens fine. (knock on wood) I tried updating Indesign hoping Adobe had come up with a fix for the issue, but it still keeps happening. it started doing this out the blue several months ago.
In my case, quitting InDesign and restarting got me to open the file. When opening the file, there was a dialog alert regarding use of an InDesign that only works in CS6 and earlier. Once this dialog closed, all was OK.
I'm currently working on my first InDesign UXP Plugin. Everything has been functioning smoothly in the developer tool, but I've encountered an issue when trying to package and install it. For some reason, the installation process fails, consistently resulting in Error Code -2.
The file system errors are usually permission errors or are related to disk space. Free some space on the disk. Then, relaunch the Creative Cloud desktop app and try installing the extension or plugin again.
To troubleshoot, I attempted to package and install some of the starter plugin templates, but these also failed with the same error code. This issue doesn't seem to be related to disk space, as I have ample space available.
As I am new to this, I apologize if this comes across as a basic question. I'm a beginner in this area and would greatly appreciate any insights or similar experiences anyone might have had with this issue.
Below, I have included the code from my home.jsx file and my manifest. If additional details or code snippets are required for a more comprehensive understanding, please let me know, and I will be happy to provide them.
Update: I ran Adobe Creative Cloud as an administrator and attempted to install the plugin again. This time, I didn't receive the Error Code -2, which is progress. However, the plugin still isn't installing. There's no error message now; it simply doesn't install. Any further insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Update: I've resolved the issue! The solution was to reinstall the Adobe Creative Cloud app. Additionally, it seems crucial to have the plugin script located in the same directory as the Creative Cloud app for successful installation. After making these adjustments, the installation process worked flawlessly. I wanted to share this in case anyone else encounters a similar problem.
When I am trying to save InDesign document to a network share using Save As or using Save a Copy, InDesign comes up with an error message saying 'Cannot save, file is damaged, error code 1'.
InDesign 2019 is up to date.
Are you able to saveAs/ SaveACopy the file locally?
What is the exact version of InDesign 2019 are you using? 14.0.1/14.0.2/14.0.3?
Is it happening with all InDesign files?
Which OS version are you using?
