Hi all,

we hope you're enjoying the summer.

Here in the office we're looking at films for MNFC and, so far, we have three confirmed.

The season kicks off on 22 September with SORRY, BABY, the debut from Eva Victor who also stars. Without giving anything away, the Roger Ebert site had this to say: "Eva Victor’s “Sorry, Baby” is not a lighthearted comedy nor a dour drama, but a somewhat irreverent tribute to everyday survival after a Bad Thing."

Julie selected Love (Szerelem), Károly Makk's beloved film from 1971, for Film Club. Based on the autobiographical writings of Tibor Déry, it is a meditation on time, memory, love and loss. Date TBC - possibly 29 September?

I SWEAR (this is a free screening on Monday 6 October) - the true life story of John Davidson. Diagnosed with Tourette's at 15, targeted as insane by his peers, he struggled with a condition few had witnessed. He was featured in a BBC documentary in, I think, the late 80s.

Possible titles for later:

HONEY DON'T from director Ethan Coen (half of the Coen Brothers), it's a dark comedy about Honey O'Donahue, a small-town private investigator, who delves into a series of strange deaths tied to a mysterious church.
GHOST TRAIL, "A hypnotizing Adam Bessa anchors this tale about a Syrian refugee living in France who believes he has found the man who tortured him" New York Times
SUNSET BOULEVARD, 75th anniversary of Billy Wilder's dark comedy noir, with Gloria Swanson as an aging silent film queen refuses to accept that her stardom has ended.

Suggestions welcome!

Hi John
29th September will be fine for me to do the intro for 'Love' if that works out as the best day.
I'm looking forward to the new season :- )
Best wishes and I hope everyone's managing to have a bit of a break
Julie

Hi John

Looking forward to it starting up again.

A few films that might be good for a monday night film that I'm sure are already on your radar and dependent on them getting release dates here!

History of Sound
Highest 2 Lowest
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey
After the Hunt
The Mastermind
Sentimental Value
Die My Love
I Love Boosters

Thanks everyone.

Julie - I'll confirm Love for either 29th September or 13th October if that's alright? Any issue with 13th October?

Alex - fantastic list of films, so far only two have release dates (A Big Bold Beautiful Journey and The Mastermind). Fingers crossed Highest 2 Lowest will get a release. It's an Apple TV+ title and will be on streaming later in the year. However, they're usually very happy to get their films into cinemas too.

Will keep you posted.

Thanks,

John

Hi Julie,

thank you. That's 13th October confirmed for Love.

Alex - no Film Club showing for HIGHEST 2 LOWEST - it's only in cinemas for a week from 5th September before appearing on Apple TV. Good news is we are showing it on Tuesday 9 September (online soon). Selling points - directed by Spike Lee, stars Denzel Washington, based on an Ed McBain 87th Precinct novel - King's Ransom - which Akira Kurosawa adapted for his crime drama, High and Low.
Also - the Regal Cinema in Dumfries is planning on showing THE BIG BOLD BEAUTIFUL JOURNEY, so we're undecided as to whether to show it here too (if we do we'll try and keep it to a different week than they do).

So far these are confirmed:

SORRY, BABY, Mon 22nd September. After a traumatic event, a woman must navigate the complexities of adulthood, including her best friend's pregnancy and her career, all while grappling with the lingering effects of her past in this drama.

ISLANDS, Mon 29th September. A tennis coach at a Spanish holiday resort strikes up a relationship with a married couple and their young son.

I SWEAR, Mon 6th October (FREE to book although there's no seat reservations. Booking will be via this site - https://www.cinematik.app/ probably mid September?). Drama based on the true story of John Davidson who was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome at a time when it was barely identifiable.

LOVE, Mon 13th October. The wife of a political prisoner tends to her mother-in-law and keeps from the old woman the truth about her son, whom she believes is in New York making a film.

Thanks,

John
