Hi Everyone

Last night was interesting - I like it when we don't all see the film in quite the same way. Twilight definitely provided lots of opportunity for discussion.

If you want to follow up on some of the films I mentioned, here they are:

Current (1964) Istvan Gaal - A young man’s disappearance and the loss felt by his friends and community.

Father (1966) - A boy in Budapest whose father is missing, presumed dead, and he fantasises about his fate/exploits.

Love (1971) – Karoly Makk (A quote I loved from this film...'half honest, half the shame, and half the humiliation'). Should be high in the Sight and Sound Top 100 films. About a missing son/husband.

Diary For My Children (1984) Marta Mezsaros - A young girl returns to Hungary to live with her Stalinist aunt. Autobiographical - she also wrote and directed ‘Diary for My Lovers’ and ‘Diary for My Mother and Father’ (both of which are hard to find).

Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) Bela Tarr, Agnes Hranitsky. A young man witnessing an escalation of violence in his hometown following the arrival of a circus.

Love gripped me from beginning to end.
Werckmeister Harmonies has one of the best opening scenes of all films I've ever watched - and a highly watchable protagonist. He's German and is dubbed in Hungarian, it's noticeable at first but you quickly get over it.
The others are all definitely worth watching.

There's also Son of Saul which we saw during lockdown (!). As you would imagine, like The Pianist and Schindler's List, it's not an easy watch.

I am keen to watch more Hungarian films and will let you know of any notable ones, and please let me know if you come across any too.

HI Julie,

thank you the intro last night. While the film wasn't as good as I hoped it would be I really enjoyed what everyone brought to the discussion afterwards. Mrs Gage said she found some humour in it, I must admit I did smile at one point  but cannot for the life of me remember what the scene was!

Thanks,

John

Hi John

Me too re: the discussion, and I can't remember which part might have been humorous either...

I loved all the landscapes, many of the 360 degree shots and the close-up faces.

As I said last night, I do worry about young children in films in which there's violence and how much they are protected from it.

Julie
