I really think it's the way to go, despite the huge amount of
investment required and political implications.

Agreed. Its the simplest and most reliable form of renewable energy - the heat is even stored so as to generate at night. Connected to wind, hydro, tidal and wave in northern Europe it could replace all fossil and nuclear power.
 
The other potential sustainable source is Thorium nuclear.
 
Electrify transport, reduce energy consumption in buildings. That leaves agriculture. I dont think horse power is the answer there.
