Trail Work Ahead on Mon River and Deckers Creek Rail-Trails

Mon River Trails Conservancy October 27, 2025 Mon River Rail-Trail Upgrades on trail mile 24-29 Drainage and resurfacing work is underway on Mile 24-29 of the Mon River Rail-Trail. This section extends from mile 24 at the Opekiska Trailhead to mile 29 at Pricketts Fort State Park. This work, which involves culvert upgrades, ditch work, tree trimming, and resurfacing, is expected to continue through the month of November. It will restore the compacted limestone surface to its original 10ft. width. The rail-trail will remain open for use but please be alert in the work zone and make sure the equipment operator sees you before going through active work areas. There may be delays or closure while resurfacing work is taking place. Thank you to our project funders! Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust Monongalia County Commission Monongalia County American Rescue Plan Act Funds Berkshire Hathaway Energy Charitable Foundation Dominion Foundation First Energy Foundation Marion County Commission Donors to the Mon River Trails Conservancy Deckers Creek Trail Resurfacing Mile 9.5 to Mile 13.5 In early November, four miles of the Deckers Creek Rail-Trail will be resurfaced from the Greer Deckers Creek Plant road crossing, mile 9.5 to mile 13.5 at the Masontown Trailhead near Sand Bank Road. This section of the rail-trail will be CLOSED during work. Located in the Deckers Creek gorge, this stretch has had several washouts and flood damage since being built in the late 1990s. This project will reestablish the trail width of 10ft and restore the compacted limestone surface that has been worn by erosion, storm damage, and trail use. Thank you to our project funders! The Deckers Creek Trail Restoration grant project is partially funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program administered by the West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways. The local match of 20% of the total project cost was funded by the Monongalia County Parks and Trails Levy and donors to the Mon River Trails Conservancy. Leaf Removal on Deckers Creek Rail-Trail TODAY, Monday, October 27 The leaf-blowing machine is moving to the Deckers Creek Rail-Trail. It will blow leaves, nuts, and twigs from the rail-trail. The trail will remain open but please be alert to possible encounter with equipment.  This work provides an easier trail to walk, run, or bike and protects the trail surface from grass and weed encroachment.
