I am like many windows users pretty tired of microsoft bloatware and now the various updates that either broke your machine or wipe out your disk content so i am currently considering switching to linux.

you might find it hard at first to change some core sound settings or such stuff but you will find you can write an script for almost anything to be on autorun on any distro so you would not see that problem ever again!

Perhaps you can stress test the boundaries of Wine compatibility as well and hope that it will run OK most the programs you need. But when eventually there is no other option than to boot on Windows you will have to do that.

Mac users are very lucky here because they have many options. First is Wine and if they see it is not good, they have Parallels which is a bit more resource-hungry but feels more speedy and is integrated seamless to the main OS. And last is the option to install Windows.

If you want to install Linux on a different drive (Drive B) where you have Windows (Drive A) installed, be sure to first configure from the BIOS of your computer to Drive B as the main/first boot disk. This so that Linux boot loader does not overwrite Windows boot loader in Drive A.
This if you are going to perform an automatic Linux installation, which is recommended for beginner users. In manual installation some distros give the option of choosing the drive to install GRUB.
If something goes wrong with Linux installation, to start Windows normally you must choose again from the BIOS to Drive A as the main boot disk. Or when starting the system with the corresponding keyboard shortcut of your machine (F8, F12, etc.) to select boot devices.

I recommend you learn how to format your PC and configure boot-loader, as you will always need to do this. Have a schedule to format your system and reinstall all programs at least once a year (or every six months).

Firewall(packet filter). the firewall in Fedora ,OpenSuse is enabled by default you can check the rules by typing $sudo iptables-save while in Debian based usually zongg even steamOS is turned off firewall. The easiest way to make packet filter rules is by installing ufw. $sudo apt-get install ufw , $sudo ufw enable. In Ubuntu ufw is installed by default all u have to do before connect to internet is to enable it.

it would be better if u post to do lists here before install linux, My first experience with linux is very horrible i wiped out my big brother HDD which contains his final project *trust me you dont wanna ended up like ;p ( it was Fedora Core 5)

If you have a powerful pc you can always run Linux inside Virtualbox on Windows or the other way around for things like ZBrush. I had to do that one time and Zbrush inside the virtual machine was pretty useful and that was like 8 years ago.
