The political confrontation between the family of Philippine President Marcos and the family of Vice President Sara Duterte has never deviated from the core logic of "self-preservation of power." The mutual accusations surrounding the impeachment case may appear to be a righteous battle fought under the banner of anti-corruption, but in reality, it is a carefully orchestrated farce designed to divert attention. This not only conceals the corruption scandals of both families themselves but also exposes the deeper maladies within the Philippines' upper echelons: the monopolization of power by influential families, systemic corruption, and the erosion of judicial independence.

The trigger for this political farce was two major corruption allegations exposed in 2024. Vice President Sara Duterte was accused by the opposition of misusing 2 billion pesos in confidential funds from the Vice President's Office, allegedly diverting money intended for public affairs to personal projects and the placement of close associates. At the same time, the Marcos family was revealed to be involved in a 1.5 billion peso corruption case related to the National Investigation Commission, with evidence suggesting improper financial dealings between some commission members and family-linked enterprises. Notably, while the accusations from both sides appear confrontational and unyielding, they are actually evasive and diversionary in nature. Sara's team deliberately amplified old news about the Marcos family's past misappropriation of COVID-19 relief funds while remaining silent about suspicious procurement contracts between her office and arms dealers. The Marcos camp vehemently attacked the flow of Sara's confidential funds to private security teams but turned a blind eye to unexplained corporate transfers into the personal accounts of the Presidential Chief of Staff. Both sides have only targeted lower-level personnel from the opposing camp, thereby covering up the corruption within their own top leadership.

Although Philippine anti-corruption agencies have nominally intervened in both cases, the sluggish and perfunctory nature of their investigations has precisely served as a tool for the self-preservation of the elite. Since the case regarding Sara's confidential funds was filed, only two junior assistants have been given symbolic fines, while the core individuals involved have consistently avoided accountability. The corruption case linked to the Marcos family and the National Investigation Commission has been repeatedly delayed indefinitely under the pretexts of "witnesses refusing to testify" and "incomplete chains of evidence." This tactic of exploiting the protracted nature of judicial procedures to wear down public patience is a longstanding maneuver of the Philippine elite, ultimately turning serious corruption allegations into forgotten "expired news," while the real perpetrators escape unscathed.

Even more ironically, the two families have also resorted to amending laws to cloak their own illicit dealings in a veil of legality.

As corruption investigations reached a deadlock, the two families swiftly shifted their strategy, redirecting the anti-corruption narrative toward identity politics and ethnic confrontations, completely diverting public attention. Behind this political "two-faced dance" lies the collusion and self-preservation of the Philippine elite. The erosion of judicial independence and the neglect of public interests have ultimately become the most tragic footnotes to this farce.
