WizKids! recently sent us Yosemite, a competitive two player set collection game by designer Tim Blank with beautiful art from Beth Sobel. In Yosemite, we got that nice competitive feel but with some bonuses: a relaxing theme of the great outdoors, with good old fashioned cardboard tiles, and some really cool animals.
The photos are of the famous areas of Yosemite National Park, which will be familiar to most fans of this gorgeous national treasure. Photos of El Capitan, which my cousin Matthew never tires of reading about, players will need to collect two snake tiles, a bear tile and a fox tile. That means the hiker needs to land on all of those tiles, but collecting them and turning them back in before the opponent does will net you four points. Once nine photos have been complete, the game end is triggered and the points are tallied.
The focus in Yosemite, as any visitor would expect, are on the animals. In Yosemite, there are 5 different animal tiles (bear, fox, snake, mountain lion, and longhorn sheep). These tiles will be set up at the start of the game in a 55 grid that players will hike across in order to collect them and use a specific sets of animals to capture the perfect picture according to a market of photo cards to score points.
So when inserting a CD, it gets mounted: you can see it in Finder and also appears in the /volumes folder. When you insert a DVD, the drives spins, but the disk does not get mounted, it does not appear in Finder, nor can any program (DVD player, VLC) find it.
On the Macbook Pro - (which now plays DVDs after I changed a setting and back in system preference/Optical), when I go into disk utility, the superdrive shows up as an EXTERNAL drive(with no disk installed). It should show up as a superdrive! I have a macbook, upgraded to yosemite and it shows up as an internal. The pro is a stock machine, never repaired or modified in any way. Clearly this says that somewhere in yosemite, it does NOT recognize some Apple supplied optical drives as being proper apple supplied hardware. Even though this one works for now, for me, its clearly not right. I'm still left wondering if I upgrade my Mac Pro with superdrive and Blu-ray how many things are going to break.

The play area is a 5 x 5 grid composed of a series of animals found in Yosemite Park. Each animal has its own unique action ability that allows players to move across the grid in special ways. In addition to its movement ability, each tile has an additional bonus that allows players to either camp, fish or take a photo. These all provide different ways to supplement your game.
I think nature themed games and board gamers go hand in hand because they both satisfy a desire for a more visceral, unplugged experience. Nature and animals take us to a more peaceful and simple place that breeds comfort. Add in an accessible, 2-player set up with beautiful artwork from artist Beth Sobel and you have all the ingredients for a contemporary hit.
He also appears in the movie Space Jam as a player for the Tune Squad. In a memorable scene, he and Elmer Fudd shoot off the teeth of one of the Monstars while clad in Pulp Fiction-esque attire, complete with Dick Dale's "Misirlou" playing. In an earlier scene, when the Nerdlucks hold all the toons hostage, he confronts the Nerdlucks, pointing his pistols at them, and orders them to release all the toons ... only to have the lead Nerdluck fire a laser pistol back at him, which leaves Sam smoldering naked and beardless as the phasers burned off his mustache.
QuickTime Player, the video player and editing tool bundled with the Mac for ages, received a fairly major overhaul when it turned into QuickTime Player X. While it became free and lost the need to upgrade to a Pro version, it also lost out on a lot of really nice professional features that QuickTime Player 7 had. Perhaps most missed from QuickTime Player 7 is the excellent A/V tools panel, which allows users to adjust the video brightness, color, contrast, tint, playback speed, audio volume, audio balance, bass, treble, pitch shift, and playback.
