to Lokale Media in Mokum
Uit Int. Beat March 2008:
The dust has settled, the votes have been counted, Lokale Media in
Mokum had over 57.000 votes cast by music fans from across the globe
as the 2007 online MokumTV's Music of the World Awards unveiled the
very best of the year in Worldmusic.
Never a competition was more close and remember, all winners were
decided purely by your online votes - power to the people!
Drumroll please for Hippo Records with two times winner Atongo Zimba
and by contracting the Best Newcomer: Jimmy O'Monga (Omonga) from
Kinshasa, Congo...
First I have to congratulate UPC for transmitting the Award Ceremony
to the Amsterdam A1 channel and the Amsterdam TV Foundation Salto for
providing the live-stream of the show, so the event could be seen live
in over 200 countries to the over 57.000 voters and fans from all over
the world.
When the drumroll sounded for Best Europe CD with 6772 voters, it was
pure sensation that Taraf de Haïdouks beated with little as 6 votes
Manu Chao and only 10 votes Shantel's Disko partizani.
A true sensation was the election of Jimmy O'Monga (Omonga). The
singer had a huge following in Brussels of mainly female fans. To them
Jimmy is the cutest thing that ever came from Kinshasa, Congo.
Due to the release of just two of his songs on a sampler, released
during the Womex International Music Fair in Sevilla, his beautiful
modern balads were heard over Europe and the USA and certain caused
him his election as the Best Newcomer in World Music 2008.
