I am about to embark on my first do it yourself altenator replacement
on my Type 1 Beetle. What do I need to do after removing te shroud
plate? Do I have to remove the Fan shroud ? I wanted to ask you guys/
gals before I started reading my books. All suggestions will be
appreciated.

Hi Inky,  You might post this question on the Facebook page for better results.

Most will tell you this job is best done by removing the engine first.  This is the way I have done it.

Some determined individuals have done this with the engine in the car but I'm not sure they saved any time or energy.

You have to either raise the alternator and fan shroud assembly up high enough to get the alternator out.  Upon reassembly, you have the challenge of getting the shroud back on - I shutter to think of trying this while the engine is in.  How would you get to the thermostat linkage and the oil cooler tin?

Or, another approach I've heard of is removing the alternator stand studs and sliding the stand and alternator together straight out.  Only difficult part is the stud removal.  Maybe this would be easier?

Once out, then you have to contend with a large nut holding the fan onto the alternator.  I think it is a 30mm nut.  An impact comes in handy here.  Since it is a rotating assembly, it will try to spin on you.

It's pretty straightforward beyond that.

Jason

The recommended method is to leave the fan in the fan shroud. Just take the front half of the pulley off so that you have something to put a crescent wrench on then use the 36mm (or 1-7/16") socket on the fan nut. Take off the carb, then continue with the generator removal. Leaving the fan in the shroud gives you enough room to pull the generator out without removing anything else.
Good luck.

After posting the question, I remembered I have an extensive library
of collected VW/Baja repair literature. I then read it and it is as
you stated. I forgot to mention I have the "Baja" rear access. I think
it would be the same as the generator instructions. I have the twin
carb setup now, so after disconnecting as little linkage as possible,
I will bring the shroud/altenator setup out to disassemble and
replace. CPI1 sent a 75amp(chrome) altenator w/free shipping for
$159,on sale from $259.
Thanks for the encouragement...You both make sense. Best
regards.
