Hi Inky, You might post this question on the Facebook page for better results.
Most will tell you this job is best done by removing the engine first. This is the way I have done it.
Some determined individuals have done this with the engine in the car but I'm not sure they saved any time or energy.
You have to either raise the alternator and fan shroud assembly up high enough to get the alternator out. Upon reassembly, you have the challenge of getting the shroud back on - I shutter to think of trying this while the engine is in. How would you get to the thermostat linkage and the oil cooler tin?
Or,
another approach I've heard of is removing the alternator stand studs and sliding the stand and alternator together straight out. Only difficult part is the stud removal. Maybe this would be easier?
Once out, then you have to contend with a large nut holding the fan onto the alternator. I think it is a 30mm nut. An impact comes in handy here. Since it is a rotating assembly, it will try to spin on you.
It's pretty straightforward beyond that.
