The list of Pirates of the Caribbean cast members is a list of actors who voiced or portrayed characters appearing in the various media (particularly the film series) based on Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean. The films star Johnny Depp in his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, followed by franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack's longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs. Alongside Depp, Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) and Keira Knightley (Elizabeth Swann) appeared as starring roles until their characters' stories had concluded with a post-credit sequence in the third film; however, both Bloom and Knightley will have cameo appearances in the fifth film.
Three actors have appeared as the same character in all four films of the franchise, and another three appeared as the same character in the short film, Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, while four reprised their roles in revamped versions of the original ride. A few of the actors were given the opportunity to portray characters from the ride.
The short film, Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, had three original actors from the film (Vanessa Branch, Lauren Maher, and David Bailie) reprising their roles from the films, respectively. Many characters in the short film are new characters, mainly a motley collection of pirates and wenches. Here is the complete cast:
In the video games, some characters are voiced by the original actors from the film (ex. Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs). However, Jack Sparrow and Barbossa have never been voiced by Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush, respectively, save for Depp voicing Jack in The Legend of Jack Sparrow. Here is the complete cast:
The Pirates franchise began from the Disneyland ride, which created a remarkable world for pirates to live in, relying on the talents of some of the best creative minds in Walt Disney Imagineering. Prior to the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, some of the film's actors reprised their characters in a revamped version of the ride; the same would happen for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here is the complete cast:
In 2012, an attraction based on the Pirates film franchise opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which had Johnny Depp reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow, relying on the talents of some of the creative minds in Walt Disney Imagineering. Here is the known cast:
The English actress joins Johnny Depp and Australian rising star Brenton Thwaites as confirmed members of the cast of what would be the fifth installment in the Pirates franchise. Javier Bardem is in talks to play the villain.
Shooting on Dead Men Tell No Tales is scheduled to begin next month in Australia. The film will be helmed by Norwegian directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, and Disney confirmed that the film will be released July 7, 2017.
With few updates about new Pirates of the Caribbean spinoffs and sequels, speculation about returning characters and unresolved storylines surfaced. However, Disney has set the record straight with its latest casting update for the sixth movie. And while the latest news may come as a disappointment to those invested in the rumors, it may benefit the franchise after On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Despite speculation that Johnny Depp and other original cast members could return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the upcoming sequel will reboot the Disney franchise. During an interview with ComicBook.com, Bruckheimer admitted that this is precisely because they don't want to wait for former Pirates stars to be available to film. He explained, "We're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors." Disney president Sean Bailey shared a similar sentiment last year, suggesting that the studio wasn't depending on Depp to go forward.
Despite rumors suggesting Johnny Depp and other original cast members could return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that the upcoming sequel will reboot the Disney franchise.
It's difficult to imagine a Pirates of the Caribbean movie without Depp's Jack Sparrow at the helm, but the character's previous adventures suggest a reboot is the best direction for the Disney franchise. Both On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales proved stale continuations of the original trilogy. Even Depp's character couldn't prevent them from feeling dull and overdone. It's hard to see how another direct sequel would revive the story. By contrast, a new cast of characters could bring something fresh to the series, allowing Pirates of the Caribbean 6 to be as successful as the first three movies and potentially spawning even more.
