Dear Roland,

Thank you for the kind words. There is a wealth of history in the Goan diaspora, some belongs to legendary names like the Pinto and others to lesser known names like John Lobo of Dubai. I hope to record some of this.

I wonder if anyone can shed light on whether Gama-Pinto is indeed the first Goan to be honoured with a postage-stamp in the diaspora.

best regards,
Selma

Somehow I think that John Lobo is a very Moidekar sounding name. Perhaps someone would know who he is. Meanwhile I shall ask Ms Carvalho  too.

Cheers
Augusto

Dear Augusto,
Thank you for enquiring. John Baptiste Herculeao Lobo was indeed from Moira. His elder brother was Wolfango Lobo, who was brutally murdered in Moira in 1960. John worked in Bombay for a while, where he nearly died of typhoid. He then made his way to Dubai in 1968. John was the founding member of the Goan Cultural Society in Dubai. After a few job stints here and there, he joined Dubai Labour Supply in 1974 and became instrumental in helping fellow Goans find jobs in Dubai.

I would appreciate any further information on John Lobo from Moidekars, who might have known him or his family.

On another note, Pio Gama-Pinto's ancestry is traced to Carrem, Porovorim, which his father Anton Gama-Pinto had a house.

Best regards,
selma

I wonder whether Selma is referring to Sophie D'Gama's brother. That would make him from Pirazona. I recall it said that he had taken many people to the Gulf for which they were grateful.

He bought the house opposite to the Moira school, which belonged to one Pinto from Bombay, if I recall right, and renovated it, but sadly he died before it could be occupied.

Dear Selma,

Since you are asking for information about John Baptiste Herculeao
Lobo and his family, here it is in brief:

Yes he was from Pirazona Moira and he was my first cousin. Our fathers
were brothers. Our ancestral house is in Pirazona, however our
Grandfather had divided his estate among his 5 sons. That is how my
dad ended up building his house at Alto-Pirazona and John’s father
landed at the so called “Sounsar Gaum” at Novo-Portugal. John was the
third in the line of four children of Acacio Lobo and Isabel Carvalho
(originally of Aldona Martin Lobo’s clan) John's father Acacio was a
sailor by profession and a fierce fighter of corruption and social/
public causes when in Goa during his time being a rabid
disciplinarian. His four children:

a) Wolfango Lobo, was brutally murdered in a clash with the village
hindu goondas of the time at a place called “XIMER“ i.e. the border
line between Pirazona and Nachinola. In the said clash his two other
first cousins merely survived death. After that the Lobos of Pirazona
got the nick name "Coitekar" as the weapons used in the clash were
"Coite"
b) Sophia Gama, married in Saligao and lived most of her life in
Rajasthan and retired in Goa alongwith her 3 sons at Novo-Portugal.
The house she purchased is just behind the SFX school. Sophie had the
misfortune of losing all three sons in the prime of their youth who
were victims of heart diseases. Two of them died in Dubai.
c) John, about whom you inquired was the third. Yes he died in Dubai
of a heart attack sometime in 1995 and was laid to rest in Moira. He
had bought and renovated an old house which is diagonally opposite the
SFX school from the previous owner Denis Lobo. He never lived to spend
a single day in this house, though his body was briefly kept there
after having been brought to Goa.. I have lost contact with Hilda his
wife and the children who as per last information were in universities
in USA and UK. My brother Floriano is probably in touch with Hilda as
he helped her to sell the house.
d) Conceicao is the youngest of the lot and he is still in Dubai.

Now I have a question for you Selma. How come these questions? How
come you know this ancient history of Wolfango etc? Have you any
connections with the Lobo family?

Regards

Atanasio Lobo (Nash)
