Hi all,

After seeing the 'banana tree totem' on the wikipedia site and in Rico's mail, I was reminded of a standing joke some years ago. Many non-moiddekars took great pleasure in calling Moira a 'Banana Republic'. Our friend Rui Gama was a great defender of the Republic and took pleasure in giving titles like President, Minister, etc. He even called Belekar's sawmill, where fishing trawlers were being built the MOIRA SHIPYARD - even though it is in Bastora!

How's that for a bit of nostalgic rememberence?

I used to work in Cuncolim some years ago. and have fond recollections of the chikoos there.

Hello Toni,

The word "Banana Republic" originated in Germany.
In German it is "Bananenrepublik".

The reporters and the media used this word to shave (TASUNK) the politicians.  Of their wrong doings and wasting the country's resources (Germany), putting the country down the drain. That was in comparison to third world countries (banana-exporting ones with rulers and despots), who used to waste all the money on building their palaces and their own family places. Money and aid the European countries sent them, being taken from the tax-payers here and even very poor people, who themselves were suffering but provided these means as a humanitarian help to others.

Have a nice day!

Hi Tony
You said " Many non-moiddekars took great pleasure in calling Moira a 'Banana Republic'. Our friend Rui Gama was a great defender of the Republic and took pleasure in giving titles like President, Minister, etc ".

If I'm not being too inquisitive who was the President, and what were the names of the members of thecouncil of ministers?

Cheers

Augusto,
The Principal rulers of the Banana Republic of Moira were :
El Presidente:   Exmo Sr. Rui Gama
El Secretario Geral: Yours Trully
Other minions needed were elevated asand when needed on a case by case basis!

Thus we had a very small ruling Junta

Hello Tony.

Greetings.
your alternate ID is very interesting and nice,
and for sure I have good memories of the Trawlers being constructed then, I think there were some 6 or 7 built there and then the shipyard(Trawler-yard) closed.. am I correct.??
I think the Belekars had ventured into fishing business, that was the time all the brothers were together in the business, not sure if they are still at it.
Now I think they have opted for making some cement blocks etc.

cheers and waiting for some more postings Tony.. Keep going.
we understand it all... hahaha

In answer to the Ques "Why are Moidekars and Cuncolkars like fruits?",
Jose, at 2.40 pm, after you had your "food", your Ans was, "They can

be sucked, chewed and tasted... the rest is for Historians and History
to decide.

Jose, are you sure you can suck,... and taste Moidekars? If so how
many have you managed to s... and taste so far? How long do they take
to masticate? And do they taste very nice? (;-)

WHAT!! heh heh heh!! ( Did I REALLY hear you say - VERY? - HEH HEH HEH!!)

And are you also sure you can s...and taste the Cuncolkars? I'm pretty
certain you haven't done so till now...Do you know they call
themselves lions?Do you know they have quite a reputation for being
warriors? Don't you think you should send an apology before the
Postmaster sends your message to Cuncolim via speed post?

And what else are the Historians or History to decide?

If I were you Jose, I'd be booking my ticket to Mombasa by now.

Cheers

Hi José,

In February 1976, I stayed at the Ambasador Hotel (near the
Intercontinental)
with my wife and daughter, on my way to Réunion Island via Tananarive.
We also stayed there on our return. My daughter was just 10 months old.
I loved the place. Think of me when you have a slug and take care.
Mog asundi,
Bernhard

Hi Ana Maria,

Suprising - the world is a small piece of cake (my father's quote).
My eldest sister was called Ana Maria (she went away in 2001).
Ana Maria was my German grandma. So my father called his
first daughter thus.
Love,
Bernhard
