Dear Jose, it is nice to read all your contributions to Moira-net.

One in particular got me thinking.  You've often mentioned your father "Motto Dotor" and that he was our family doctor in Moira you say. From Moira, there have been an incredible amount of both priests and doctors. There must be so many stories behind them.

In my Atafondem de Sousa family there are no doctors, and only one priest I've discovered (Fr. Pedro Caetano de Sousa) but I do not know anything about him.
My grandpa's mother Visitação was a de Sousa from Povoação, she came from the house known as the 'house of seven priests and seven doctors'! I've only discovered one doctor (José Clemente de Conceição Souza) whose signed a medical book one relation has kept. Anyone know the rest?

Here are a few in my "tree" . Please share any stories if you know them, and add any others from Moira too. I think the "doctors" topic was mentioned before, but I couldn't find this in my inbox.. Has anyone got any stories about these medical Moidekkars and religious ones too?

Dr. António Caetano Fidelis da Gama Pais (1925-61) - Jose's father
Dr. José Clemente de Conceição e Souza from Povoação
Dr. António Wenceslau Gaudêncio de Souza from Atafondem (Prof. Fanchu's father)
Dr. Brenda Prisca de Souza-Ekman from Atafondem
Dr. Cecil Clifford Anthony de Souza from Povoação
and his parents Dr. Felisberto and Dr. Vithalda Maria de Souza

Fr. António Anand da Gama Pais (Moira-net member, Parish Priest in Povorim?)
Fr. Carlos Evaristo da Gama (current Parish Priest in Nachinola?)
Fr. António Filipe da Gama Pais (Jose's uncle)
Fr. Pedro Caetano Consolação de Sousa from Atafondem
Fr. José Paulo Filipe da Conceição Nazaré (1922-97) from Bambordem
Fr. José Paulo Filipe de Nazaré (1858-1903) from Bambordem
Fr. Joaquim Silvestre de Nazaré (1784-1832) from Bambordem
Fr. João Batista Evaristo da Conceição Nazaré (1920-86) from Bambordem

Please mention any other priests and doctors from Moira and share any stories...

Hello Richard

That is a lot of input from your side.
I hope this can be increased with inputs from other netters.
One suggestion would be ward wise inputs. I remember Augusto had suggested
making a database of Moidekkars and their professions but it did not seem to gain much
momentum.

I remember a lot more priests although I do not know their full names
Atafondem:
Fr. Adriao
Fr. Ublado sj
then another priest who was the parish priest of cansaulim. I recollect he even had a fall from the roof of the church. Tony do you recollect his name, your neighbour from atafondem.
then another who was the cousin of Anton also from Atafondem,

Fr. Gervasio, Fr. Atanasio, Fr. Arlino, Fr. Tony da silva sj(present provincial of Goa province), Fr. Benjamin Sequeira.

I also think there were a few more nuns like Sister Monica and she had some sisters also nuns, then I think Nazar Silva has a sister who is a nun.
Please can any netter give us more inputs on this.
we all could be more familiar.

Regarding Doctors, We have Dr. Victor presently residing in Moira,
then of course Dr. Correia who owned the Remanso and his daughter Dr. Alice Correia Gouviea, Dr. Filipe Gouveia (Maternally connected to Moira).
Off Course, Dr. Veloso the senior and his son Vincent and Joaquim.

Please other netters do give your inputs.
The above is what I can recollect sitting here in Mombasa.

It would be nice to continue this thread.

Cheers

Dear all
Thank you for all your contributions, keep them flooding in. Keep trying to remember. When in Goa I shall do some more research.
I am good with detail and data organisation, and have done this with my family tree.  But when it comes to background information -  a story behind an individual, I lack, having less connection not having lived in Goa or met these individuals. So all your memories, stories etc.. will be good, especially for the future generations.
With regards to Jose's suggestion of a database of Moidekkars - I'm more than happy to help and I can start one. But won't be able to give it any real attention until August 2009 after my final exams. It will be a lifetime project, containing data on Moidekkars past and present (i.e. names , dates , places, professions, stories etc..) and I will source where each piece of data was collected from.

Thank you, Teotonio...

And now... am I rushing in where angels fear to tread...? but I want
to ask a simple question - should we not count you yourself? Whatever
may be the present status, it is nevertheless a fact that you
underwent the full course of training and were ordained and served in
the priesthood, undertaking all the duties, for a long time... (I'm
probably wrong, but wasn't it over 16 years? Please correct me...)

Yes, Edgar,
26 years as Jesuit (as Professed member of the Order) and nearly 16
years as priest.
Let me add three more who escaped my earlier list:
Fr. Crisólogo de Melo was my colleague in the Portuguese primary
school and joined the Salesians.
Fr. Evaristo da Gama was my colleague in the Primary School and the 2
seminaries of Goa.
Fr. Atanasio Lobo, was my prefect and teacher in Rachol Seminary.

I have tried to collate a list of the priests of Moira with the help of my mother and aunt. It is not in the order of the year of their ordination. Many of them have passed away. Some of them are abroad. Many of them have already been mentioned by other MNs. But still, if it interests some.......

On a note of frivolity, Is there anyone who has not not have a nun or priest inthe family in Moira?  Its time for the Occupational Directory to make a resurrection.  That would be interesting as we may find there are a lot of Marine Engineers and doctors and IT Consultants who never lie low.

C'mon folk, lets get the General Directory going.  Will make reading much more exciting.!!

Dear Evylyn
Every family from Moira does seem to have a nun or priest in ! I've uploaded a file listing priests and nuns from Moira.  It was taken from the directory I've started. I will try and upload all the information I know into it and any information emailed to me will be included and sourced from the email.

Dear All,

Young Richard must be commended for a very fine piece of work. Not only has he listed out all the priests so far  mentioned on the thread but also the details as gathered from the thread and who all have mentioned the name. Congratulations Richard you might just end up being Moira's Dr. Samuel Peppys.

God willing I will be able to catalogue something similar to Dr. Pepys's library in my lifetime, even if it's just a section on Moidekar genealogy - then others can add sections on Moira history etc....
