The film received high critical acclaim overseas as well. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 86% of 14 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.2/10.[66] Rachel Saltz of The New York Times said, "Bollywood isn't afraid to be mawkish. Barfi! is at times, though not noticeably more so than most Hindi movies, despite its premise of special lovers with a special lesson to teach."[67] Lisa Tsering The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a refreshingly non-commercial exercise" and added that "poignant Bollywood romantic comedy". On the performances of the cast, she wrote, "[...] Basu has guided Kapoor, and especially Chopra, to turn in exceptionally restrained, organic performances.""[68] Ronnie Scheib of Variety wrote, "Unlike Michel Hazanavicus' black-and-white silent homage "The Artist", Basu's film bursts with sound and color; only the speaking- and hearing-impaired Basu is condemned to silence."[69] Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times was more critical of the film, despite praising aspect including "the hard-working cast, a lush score, exotic location shooting and scattered warmth", called it as "more of an endurance test than entertainment."[70]

But, then I read some reviews about this movie, and how they all seem to focus on one thing that it's "inspired" from Hollywood movies. I don't get why are we obsessed over such things. Does that make Barfi any less original, or does it diminish the work done by the cast and the crew?

like the claims that it copies charlie chaplin. honestly with the impact those movies have had i would really think its an homage. i mean it makes sense right a movie about a deaf and mute guy referencing silent movies, makes a lot of sense. the clock scenes, even the ladder were recognisable were more references to me than copied scenes.

i mean noone calls kung hustle a copied movie it references multiple movies. about acknowledging that reference, i genuinely don't think basu needs to spell out how every reference works. its for to recognise and enjoy.

Anurag Basu's Barfi! is creating a lot of buzz over being selected as India's official entry for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film, however, seems heavily inspired by many movies.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Barfi! is a love story, set in 1970s Bengal, of a deaf-and-mute guy (portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor) and an autistic girl (played by Priyanka Chopra). South siren Ileana D'Cruz also features in the film.

Originality in Barfi's script is under question and many think that the director should have used his own creativity rather than aping scenes from various films.

Check out:

LOL She was very competent in this role, yes. :)

The movie is not without its flaws, obviously, but the message and the resolution of the plot are what made me go gaga for it. There aren't enough Indian movies that would see the world this way, so whatever little flaws it had along the way, I forgave them all. It surprised me with that, in a very good way. I hope you like it!

I had been waiting to read your thoughts on 'Barfi!' all this while. :) Nice read. There is something that I felt but you have beautifully expressed in this post. That very few movies show that love is not a one-time deal. I loved the scene Barfi introduces Jhilmil to Shruti for the same reason. I am also planning to watch it once again.

@ Stuart - LOL Why do you do this to yourself? :) With so many movies out there that you know you'd enjoy, why watch one that you're convinced you won't like?

Now I'll be honest I hadn't seen any of the movies that it allegedly plagiarized, so that could be why it had no bearing on my opinion of the film, but if you do watch it, try to watch it until the end, the good stuff and the important messages are pretty much crammed in the last half hour or so. (Just don't expect any of it to be like Anjaana Anjaani, not even the chemistry between the two, it's like two completely different actors in this one. ;))

Darjeeling and Indian Cinema share an eternal bond that has been celebrated through various movies as well as song sequences shot in this heavenly Himalayan hamlet. From Mere Sapno ki Rani to Main Chali Main Chali to Kasto Maza Hai, Darjeeling has ignited the imagination of many filmmakers since as early as the 1960s. Movies like Aradhana, Humraaz, Mausam, China Town, Barsaat ki Ek Raat, Bobby had already patronised Darjeeling. However, more recently we remember Darjeeling for movies like Parineeta, Barfi and the not so commercially acclaimed Yaariyan.

Movies have always fascinated me and have been a driving force behind shaping my wanderlust. Has any movie inspired you to go on a location chase? Have you been mesmerised by movies and their locations? Have movies ignited your wanderlust? If yes then let me know about your experiences? I would love to read about your experiences. Until then let me go back to my nth rerun of the movie while sipping on a perfectly brewed cup of Darjeeling tea.

I never really rooted for them , there was something about the love that Barfi and jhilmil had .. Shruti and barfi was more like infatuation and what barfi and jhilmil had was the love that would last forever and it did
