Zearn's Summer Intensive Series is designed to be used flexibly across summer learning models, including in-school summer programming, tutoring or at home. In addition to digital lessons, we offer instructional materials that educators can use to facilitate rich math discussions around the core ideas of each series.

Each digital lesson in the summer math program takes about 30 minutes to complete. Kids work through each component at their own pace. After completing one lesson, they automatically go on to the next lesson in the series.

The major math strands for a sixth-grade curriculum are number sense and operations, algebra, geometry, and spatial sense, measurement, and functions, and probability. While these math strands might surprise you, they cover the basics of what a sixth grader should learn in math.

The following lessons and videos have been designed for review and practice. They are intended to support students during the time of extended school closure. The department recognizes that students will have limited practice support and activities have been designed to reinforce the lesson rather than extend the learning in the lesson.

A new course must be created to adapt to the new second grade mathematics common core standards. Currently our courses are aligned with the Florida Standards. The common core standards introduces the incorporation of reading heavily into the mathematics curriculum and many of those standards are not addressed.

Concepts from previous lessons are integrated into this assessment task: integers, absolute value, and comparing numbers. Students apply their knowledge, review their work, and make revisions based on feedback from the teacher and their peers. This process creates a deeper understanding of the concepts.

If several students in the class are struggling with the same issue, you could write a relevant question on the board. You might also ask a student who has performed well on a particular part of the task to help a struggling student.

ELL: When students work in pairs, it allows you to monitor individual student progress by listening to and recording student conversations and peer problem solving. This type of collaborative work gives ELLs the opportunity to use mathematical language and to engage in conversation with their peers. Allow them to use their language of origin if they are paired with a student who speaks that language.

ELL: Write the key points, observations, and common misconceptions on a poster so that students can refer back to them throughout the unit. When working with ELLs, provide supplementary materials, such as graphic organizers, to illustrate new concepts and vocabulary necessary for mathematical learning.
