Good morning everyone

I wish you are well .

Please, I research the name of different softwares permitting the modelisation of the groundwater .

I need a checklist with the names of software, their characteristics and if the software is free or not.

Thank you for your help

kind regards

Hello Chaymae

I have a partial response to your questrion. I have prepared a guide for groundwater modeling using free software, specifically ModelMuse as the graphic user interface (GUI), various MODFLOW versions, and QGIS for creating input files for ModelMuse.  Here is a list of the software. If you are interested in the guide I prepared, please contact me with your email address and I will send it to you.

Applications to Download for Modeling: These are the free applications to download and have IT install. It’s recommended to have all applications except QGIS installed in one directory (e.g. “USGS”) with each in their own named subfolder in that directory. Create desktop icons for QGIS and ModelMuse.

QGIS (for creating various georeferenced files, transforming file formats, contouring, etc.)

https://qgis.org/en/site/

QGIS Training Manual:  https://docs.qgis.org/3.16/en/docs/training_manual/index.html

QGIS User Guide: https://docs.qgis.org/3.16/en/docs/user_manual/

MODELMUSE (Graphical User Interface for modeling). Current version is 5.1.1

https://water.usgs.gov/water-resources/software/ModelMuse/index5_0.html

(down left side of page - pick 64-bit or 32-bit installer per your computer)

MODFLOW 6 (latest version 6.3.0 of MODFLOW )

https://water.usgs.gov/water-resources/software/MODFLOW-6/mf6.3.0.zip

MODFLOW NWT (option that’s good for unconfined flow conditions)

https://www.usgs.gov/software/modflow-nwt-newton-formulation-modflow-2005

(little way down page to “Download Current Version of MODFLOW-NWT”)

MODFLOW 2005 (original MODFLOW standard, replaced by MODFLOW 6, now obsolete)

MODFLOW CFP (for karst conduits modeling. Create model in MODFLOW 6 first)

https://www.usgs.gov/software/conduit-flow-process-cfp-program-simulate-turbulent-or-laminar-groundwater-flow-conditions    (little ways down page to “Download Current Version of CFP”)

PEST (for auto-calibration of complex models)

https://pesthomepage.org/programs (you also need to download Groundwater Utilities and PLPROC)

Also see https://water.usgs.gov/nrp/gwsoftware/ModelMuse/Help/working_with_pest.html

MODPATH (for particle tracking in completed model)

https://www.usgs.gov/software/modpath-particle-tracking-model-modflow

(little way down page to “Download Current Version of MODPATH)”

MT3D (for plume concentration evaluations over time – requires lot of chemical parameter inputs)

https://www.usgs.gov/software/mt3d-usgs-groundwater-solute-transport-simulator-modflow

(little way down page to “Download Current Version of MT3D-USGS”)

Best regards,

Bob

ModelMuse is part of the USGS suite of software and supports all major versions of MODFLOW.
There also a lot of videos on how to use it and it is pretty intuitive for setting up models.

Two software additional groundwater software to note is MODFLOW-OWHM and IWFM-2015

MODFLOW-OWHM combines MODFLOW-2005, MODFLOW-NWT, MODFLOW-CFP, and MODFLOW-FMP with a number of enhancements.

For the documentation, I usually recommend new users to read the first 20 pages and Appendix 4.

There are currently two major releases of OWHM, v1 released in 2014 and v2 released in 2020. It is highly recommended to only use the v2 version (currently at v2.3).

IWFM is a finite element integrated groundwater model developed by the state of California department of water resources.

There also is a project called FREEWAT (http://www.freewat.eu/) that is a European developed GUI based on QGIS and an edited version of Flopy.
Right now, it only works with MODFLOW-2005 and MODFLOW-OWHM v1, but they are working on an update to support OWHM v2.

Hope that helps out.
