Hello everyone. I really wanted to learn more about groundwater modeling, but I don't have any mentor that would offer me direct instruction or guidance. Could someone please list the materials needed or the learning path from the beginning?

Thank you, I sincerely appreciate your help!

Hi Naufal,

I have been trying to learn groundwater modeling as well and what helped me the most to get started are the documentation provided by USGS, themselves. Assuming you are planning to use MF6, here are some links to those:
 1.  MF6 framework: https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/06/a57/tm6a57.pdf
 2.  MF6 gwf model conceptualization: https://pubs.usgs.gov/tm/06/a55/tm6a55.pdf
 3.  MF6 input and output: https://water.usgs.gov/water-resources/software/MODFLOW-6/mf6io_6.2.0.pdf

It might be useful to start by reading the first documentation. Then jump into a simple modelling exercise where you implement each package one-by-one while using the second and third documentation as references. The second will help you understand the conceptualization in mf6 or how the physical processes and states are being represented in the model, and then the third will help you understand how to actually feed your data into mf6.

If you are up to it, you can also learn flopy, which is a python package which among its many uses, can serve as a utility to write the mf6 input files allowing you to easily script the creation of your model.

Good luck,
Mart

Hi Mart,
As an extension to this question, can you please guide me about how to learn groundwater modelling using Visual MODFLOW? Should I first learn MF6 and then jump towards Visual MODFLOW?

Hi,

I would recommend you to read Applied Groundwater Modelling book by Anderson. For video practice of course I would recommend Hatari Labs youtube channel, I found it very useful.

For tutorials it is vary for each software. During my master degree I was taught using PMWIN by Chiang. I didnt like it much, I prefer Model Muse for the GUI version.

Recently I played around with Flopy. The introduction to flopy modflow by Mark Bakker and Vincent Post is really good. The manuals in flopy.readthedocs.io is also nice. But for me the learning curve is a bit steep. I would expect the same for those without a few groundmodelling experience.

What I know for sure is that a lot of things have been going on in the field of Groundwater Modelling and I think it would requires years of practice to master. But I enjoyed it very much and I think it will offer a lot of opportunity.

Good luck with your groundwater modelling journey!

Best wishes,
Malik

Hello Naufal

Check out Hatari labs on the internet. They have many YouTube training sessions from basic MODFLOW project setup and running to more complex groundwater modeling. They use ModelMuse and MODFLOW 6.  Very good training materials.  I developed a step-by-step guide for building a MODFLOW 6 model using ModelMuse, and it includes references to several key YouTube training materials for QGIS (used for creating input files for ModelMuse) and MODFLOW 6 with Modelmuse. I'm happy to share that guideline package with you if you would like. Reply back to me @ rmlann at AOL if you are interested.

Best regards,
Bob
