Hello,

Trouble encountered in running MT3DMS with flow model inputs generated by MODFLOW 2005.
The following error ends the MT3DMS List file:

FMI5 -- FLOW MODEL INTERFACE PACKAGE, VERSION 5, FEBRUARY 2010, INPUT READ FROM UNIT 10

Error Reading Flow-Transport Link File Possibly Caused by:
 1. Incompatible Styles of Unformatted Files Used by MODFLOW and MT3DMS;
 2. Unformatted Flow-Transport Link File Saved by Verison 1 of LinkMT3D
Package Which Is No Longer Supported by MT3DMS.

For additional reference, the LMT6/7 pointer-file contents produced by MODFLOW for associated binary flow data are:

OUTPUT_FILE_NAME    mflmt6.bin
OUTPUT_FILE_UNIT    333
OUTPUT_FILE_HEADER    extended
OUTPUT_FILE_FORMAT   unformatted

Any clues on where programmer error might be occurring?

Did you make the mt3dms file by yourself or did you use any software like Modelmuse!

Hello Hpc,

Which mt3dms file are you referencing too?
All mt3dms inputs were generated with a self authored Python processing routine.

MODFLOW produced the binary flow file which mt3dms appears to have a format-reading error (see update below).

UPDATE:
In the mt3dms name file I was referring to the lmt6 MODFLOW txt file and not the binary file.  I have fixed this apparent mistake, and now the
mt3dms list file stops with the following scripting (still not fully running, and some sort of error occurring in the flow file reading):

LISTING FILE: mtlst.txt

 OPENING mflmt6.bin

 FILE TYPE:FTL   UNIT  10

Perhaps making the associated input files available will help lend some insight to the error(s).

-Thanks

Joseph,
The BTN file you uploaded has errors in several places. For instance, the DZ array for layer 2 is missing an entry for each row beginning on line 51 of the BTN file. Lines 51, 52, etc.. only have 24 entries when MT3D expects 25, one for each column of the model. There are some errors later in the file as well after NOBS. The best way to check your input would be to look at the output file (in your case, mtlst.txt) as MT3D echoes back all the input to this file.

Hello Vivek,

I have made the needed changes to the script which writes the BTN file after reviewing the documentation included with mt3dms.
I hoped that I had covered any major previous mistakes, yet the mtlst.txt file still stops immediately after the following printed text:
FMI5 -- FLOW MODEL INTERFACE PACKAGE, VERSION 5, FEBRUARY 2010, INPUT READ FROM UNIT 10

This is the link to the new BTN file, which may or may not need ongoing fixes...

Respectfully,
Joe

Hi Joe,

The BTN file looks good now. You need to create the SSM package input file because you have constant head cells in the model. You can see this error message printed to the DOS (command prompt) window.

Vivek,

Your wisdom proved very helpful.  Thank you for sharing such.
Have discovered other input errors, but with your recommendation to record the commands sent and received with a non-shell ran MT3DMS simulation, troubleshooting has gotten a lot easier.

Respectfully,
Joe

Hello once again,

Success was achieved in the run of MT3DMS and reading of binary results (thank you Vivek).
Now it appears some important parameter(s) might be missing in my input files. The link below highlights the problem visually (contained images HEAD.PNG and CONS.PNG), and the included MT3DMS inputs will hopefully help in discovering the problem.

It doesn't appear that advection, or the flow system are interacting with the contaminant source (an instant source in transient conditions).
It looks as though only diffusion/dispersion is at play in the migration of contaminant from the red (pentagonal) origin.

Any insights out there?

Hold the presses!

Managed to figure out that the error in concentrations was related to some of the various inputs for MT3DMS preventing appropriate calculations relative to the test model.
After setting many of the parameters to their defaults, things seem to be working well.  Even managed to implement a means of rapidly viewing successive concentrations through time to see the morphology of a plumes movement.

Kudos to this User group!
