Dear All,

What are the best open source and easy to use software to separate baseflow from streamflow?

Thanks

Hi Mian,

MODFLOW is probably not the ideal software to use separate base flow...

However, to do it, you can simulate the streams using the Streamflow-Routing Package (SFR).  The SFR output budget contains the groundwater contribution to streamflow which you can compare to the total flow in the stream.  The one trick is that the overland runoff typically needs to be calculated externally from MODFLOW.  It can also be estimated by using the MODFLOW Farm Process, but that definitly eliminates your "easy to use" requirement.

Hope this helps.

Dear Mian,

Baseflow separation is often used to determine what portion of a streamflow hydrograph occurs from baseflow, and what portion occurs from overland flow. Common methods include using isotope tracing and the software program HYSEP ( http://water.usgs.gov/software/HYSEP/ ), among others.

Use of stable isotopes can be made for separation of baseflow from streamflow. Since precipitation in each rain or snowfall event has a specific isotopic signature, and the signatures of subsurface water can also be identified by well sampling, the composite signature in the stream is an indicator of, at any given time, what portion of the streamflow comes from overland flow and what portion comes from subsurface flow.

Kumar

Hi all,

The following paper is the new method for the baseflow separation.
"Baseflow separation in a small watershed in New Brunswick, Canada, using a recursive digital filter calibrated with the conductivity mass balance method" (
DOI: 10.1002/hyp.9417)
FYI

John
