Hello,

I am working with Groundwater Vistas 9 and I am experiencing a problem when creating a Quadtree mesh.

Model characteristics
  • Groundwater Vistas 9
  • 5 layers
  • 149 rows × 219 columns
  • Approximately 26,332 active cells before Quadtree refinement
  • Quadtree Refinement enabled

Workflow followed
  1. Start Quadtree Mesh
  2. HSU Zone to Quadtree Level
  3. Smooth Quadtree Mesh
  4. Allocate Quadtree Mesh

Refinement setup

I initially defined three refinement levels:

  • Level 1: plume area
  • Level 2: river corridor
  • Background cells with no refinement

After the software froze, I simplified the refinement and tested only two levels:

  • Zone 1 = no refinement
  • Zone 2 = single refinement

I also tested with:

  • Boundary conditions removed
  • Smoothed HSU corners
  • Non-smoothed HSU corners
  • Different HSU zone configurations
  • Enabling the "Only Use Active Nodes in Model" option

Problem

When I select:

Grid → Quadtree Refinement → Allocate Quadtree Mesh

and confirm the dialog:

"This function allocates final memory to the Quadtree and copies parent properties. No changes may be made to the Quadtree mesh after this step. Continue?"

Groundwater Vistas becomes "Not Responding" indefinitely.

Observations

During the freeze:

  • CPU usage remains around 10–15%
  • RAM usage remains stable (~18 GB used out of 32 GB)
  • Disk activity is almost zero
  • No increase in memory consumption is observed

Therefore, it does not appear that the software is actively processing the mesh.

Additional information

The Hydrostratigraphy zones are assigned in all layers. The model runs normally without Quadtree refinement.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue during the Allocate Quadtree Mesh step in GWV 9?

Are there known limitations related to:

  • Number of active cells?
  • HSU zone definitions?
  • Layer structure?
  • DISU generation?
  • Quadtree implementation in GWV 9?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

This sounds like it could be a bug in Groundwater Vistas. I suggest you contact the developer.
