I'm currently rebuilding an older groundwater model in mf2k and keep getting this error about modflow unit -5:
                                 MODFLOW-2000
U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY MODULAR FINITE-DIFFERENCE GROUND-WATER FLOW MODEL
                            Version 1.18.01 06/20/2008

Using NAME file: model.nam
Run start date and time (yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss): 2024/05/21 21:42:43
forrtl: severe (64): input conversion error, unit -5, file Internal Formatted Read
Image              PC        Routine            Line        Source
mf2k.exe           005EFCFA  Unknown               Unknown  Unknown

Stack trace terminated abnormally.

The listing file ends after the str package opens but I can't for the life of me find the error in that pacakge, So I'm not sure where to look for issues.

Any suggestions?

It looks like there is some formatting issue with the STR input file. The following link might help. Don't overlook that it uses fixed format instead of free format.

Thanks for the tip, the rest of my files use free format and is set up for free format. I was using flopy to generate the files so I assumed it would make them correctly but perhaps not. I'll manually make the files and see how that goes.

Well, this is probably way out in left field but Unit 5 ʻusedʻ to be used for card readers.  So, I would look for the unit assignments and related format control to see if something in your input is wonky.

Could we dream of a groundwater modeling code written in another language different from Fortran (and Python). I mean, we know that Fortran put a man on the moon.... but how about Mars?

Check the unit number in the nam file, change it, check the name of the SFR file. Open MF2K documentation and see the structure of your model. Try running it without SFR, open the SFR package with flopy, etc. You need to go step by step to be able to debug.
