Hi everyone,

When building a groundwater flow model in Visual MODFLOW, how do you usually decide:

  1. The number of layers,

  2. The criteria for dividing layers, and

  3. The hydraulic conductivity values for each layer?

Do you base the layer structure mainly on geological units, differences in hydraulic properties, or simplified zones?
I’d like to know your common practice or general approach.

Thanks,

This is a rather conceptual question, and the answer may be different depending a few factors. I recommend, therefore, reading some basic textbooks such as Applied Groundwater Modeling (https://shop.elsevier.com/books/applied-groundwater-modeling/anderson/978-0-08-091638-5) by Anderson, Woessner, and Hunt, or selected short books from The Groundwater Project (gw-project.org).
