Hi All-
I was able to forward track particles in modelmuse. But I am struggling with backwards tracking for some reason.

Here are some basic info of the current model setup:
1. I have one steady state (0-1 sec) and one transient stress period (1 - 1576800000 sec) with a max time step of 315360000 sec (10 years) i.e. 5 time steps in transient
2. the output mode (MODFLOW packages and programs) is selected as "pathlines" for Modpath version 6.
3. the initial particle placement is at "top" with a "grid" choice
4. I release my particle at 1 sec (release tracking time) and it provides me 50 years of simulation result going forward

However, when i select backward tracking from "tracking direction", the model does not run for 50 years (1576800000 sec) backward in time; instead it runs for 1 sec only. Is only 1 time step allowed for backwards tracking? How could I track backwards for 50 years or more? am I missing something?? Please let me know if you need more information.

thanks in advance -RM

Try changing the release time to the end of the simulation.

Thanks for your suggestion. I did change the release time to the end of simulation but it did not work for some reason. It always stops after the first time step whether "steady" or "transient".

Did you solve the problem? I have the same...

I also have the same problem.
I was trying to focus on some other issues in my python code and thats the reason I dint ask it yet.

[Solved] I solved it: Reference time in ModPath is the starting of the simulation. In backward simulation delta time is negative, so 'reference time' is at the end.
I used modelmuse, so for the object put the 'real' time, in defining postprocessor->modpath "reference time" should be set to the final time (for example in my problem was at the end of simulation, 360days).
