Respected Sir,

My name is Anju  and I am doing a project with modflow 2014.2. I am not able to run the pest and sensitivity analysis. I would be glad if you could help me out.

1) If the pest is not working in visual modflow 2014.2, is there any alternate option to run the pest.

2)Does visual modflow provide a provision for writing the code and running the pest.

Hi,

I'm not familiar with Visual Modflow, but I've been using PEST as a standalone tool (without any GUI) - so an answer to your first question is YES. I'd recommend you check the PEST homepage (http://www.pesthomepage.org/) and download a PEST manual and associated documentation.

If Visual Modflow created any PEST input files (and template files and instruction files) for you, just edit them manually. The main configuration file will have an extender *.PST (PEST control file). This (and mainly the documentation) should get you started. Good luck! :)

Hi Anju

I use Groundwater Vistas 6, which is quite good for setting up the PEST files and running PEST. All the actual PEST runs are done at in command windows however, not in GV itself, and I imagine Visual MODFLOW is the same.

PEST itself uses purely text file i/o. I still end up going to DOS and editing the PEST files, and running things from the command line some of the time, to do cases that GV doesn’t handle.

It does take a while to understand PEST, it is pretty powerful mathematics and is not super user-friendly. There are tons of subtle options as well.

Good luck

Simon

Have you tried contacting Visual Modflow support?  I've found VisMOD to be much less friendly than Vistas when it comes to doing anything outside of the program. If you call them, ask for Harry.  He definitely seems to know way more than the other tech support people.

Visual Modflow runfile should be there as a batch file in the same folder. Now you can couple the batch file to any sort of programming language to use pest or ucode.

What did you mean by saying pest is not working. Can you run the modflow model first and then run it along with pest. Try not to use spacebars and ö, ü kind of characters in the filename.

Check that the folder does not have name like ä or å or any other alphabet not in the english dictionary. Next thing is that do not run models created in the network drives.
